Food cart / stall: How to start?

Hello all,

In England I ran a food stall in one of the local markets (tapas style cuisine) and wanted to see if I could replicate here in Zurich.

I get the feeling its a little more difficult, as other than the viaduct I cant think of a "foody market" and I have been surprised by the lack of street vendors / carts.

A quick search of the forum turned up this thread from a few years ago: Food Street Cart Vendor which lowers my hopes somewhat! Does anyone have experience in the matter or suggestions of where to start?

Kind regards

James

Do a forum search for "viadukt", in the top result you will then find a very nice man called (ironically) grumpy with a stall that can help answer your questions.

Re: Food cart / stall: How to start?

Have a look at the Zürich HB market on Wednesday, I was there for 5 years and have just left as I couldn't cope with the long hours (as well as running my Viadukt shop) and also because it was turning more into "eating in" type market. It's a quiet time of year there right now but will start getting busy again in a few weeks. I know they are looking for more vendors.

I'll pm the contact details for you in a mo.

Re: Food cart / stall: How to start?

Hi there,

I'm also looking to set up a food stall when I move to Zurich in a couple of months. Any advice on what permits I need to get and how to get them would be much appreciated. My German is very basic but I'm hoping take an intensive course before I arrive to give me a head start.

Thanks very much,

Beth

Re: Food cart / stall: How to start?

I remember reading an article about the difficulties experienced by some young Swiss fellows who ran a food cart. They had to overcome some hurdles that I would never have expected. For example, they had a really hard time getting permisison to set up in the parking lot of a diy / home supplies store located in the suburbs. The owners were concerned that there would be too much of a "food" smell in the vicinity of the cart.
