Thoughts on time off?

Hi Forum,

Lately I have been having a great urge to take extended time off work. And by this I mean leave my current job, take a year off to just unwind, relax, take care of my health, and do a few of the things I've always wanted to do. Like many of you (I imagine), I've been working since I was 20 and never really taken a break except for a year off after marriage :-)

We live simply, and have some savings, so I am not worried about the monetary aspect of a year off work. But what stops me from going ahead is the worry that after a year, I might have become redundant in the workplace. I never thought the wrong side of 30 was old but the job market increasingly makes me feel so :-)

If any of you have experiences or perspectives to share, esp in the context of Switzerland, it will be immensely helpful.

Did you, or someone you know, take time off in their 30s or later, and manage to come back and find a new job?

What were the challenges you/ they faced?

Wow, sounds like you've had an idyllic life thus far. If you have the opportunity and the desire, then do it. Simples.

Re: Thoughts on time off?

Yes, taking a sabbatical year is not to be seen as a bad thing. Even in the business world it's being talked about and considered since our society pushes us to live for our job while we think we are working in order to live.

I've chosen a freelance path to live more freely and to choose when, how and where to work. It might not be your case, yet time off will surely help you.
