Re: Thinking of starting a Fried Chicken Business like KFC

There is a documentary currently on in the UK all about KFC in the UK and how it is struggling - basically because of the very unhealthy product and bad reputation. They know they need to move away from fried chicken but customers are difficult to persuade.

I like KFC occasionally but can't see the limited menu going down well here in Switzerland. Starting price for a UK franchise is minimum of 1 Million Pounds, not including the building.

Although deep frying things is definitely not the most healthy way to cook something...at least KFC uses real chicken as opposed to McDs and BK with processed crap

True, but looking at the conditions the chickens are kept in I don't think you'd find anything of nutritional value in them.

However, regardless of that, I don't think KFC would work in Switzerland.

Dude, if KFC failed then try to open a Nando's. I'll be your regular customer if you serve halal meat.

Re: Thinking of starting a Fried Chicken Business like KFC

The whole idea of KFC is that it should be quick, cheap and tasty.
Quick means you need loads of staff: Expensive
Chicken is expensive in Swiss: Expensive
Tasty: Possible (but for Swiss fried is normally frowned upon)
The business model doesn't work... just like Nandos.
The Fork and Bottle pub near Sihl City has a fried chicken Friday and it is good, but $$$ !

I was in bed for almost a week after contracting salmonella from a Nandos in Balham.
So although grilled chicken is theoretically healthier, it means nowt when cooked by a minimum wage youth in a baseball cap. At least with KFC the chicken is pressure fried @1 bar, 180°C for 15 mins... so guaranteed sterile.

It was here for 24 years... 1980 - 2004.... that's a long time to try and make something work.

I would say the problems here are:
  • Price of locally sourced chicken along with all other high Swiss operating costs
  • KFC use chicken farms where the chucks live in crappy conditions and are pumped full of rubbish in order to be able to fatten quickly enough to be someones meal. I'm guessing that doesn't fly in Switzerland, especially nowadays.
  • KFC have a worse global reputation for bad health and hygiene that McDonalds et al

So, you would need to find a local chicken farm that was willing to provide chicken at a low cost, and provide enough to fuel several busy stores.
About "KFC use chicken farms where the chucks live in crappy conditions and are pumped full of rubbish"
I have a neighbour who made a lot of money importing hormones to make Swiss chickens fat quickly before he got an attack of the guilts; I assume somebody else is now doing it.

About "you would need to find a local chicken farm " Why? Look at the origin labels of the chicken sold in major Swiss supermarkets.

Indeed, but they said fast food would never take off in France - now practically every street corner in Paris has a McD.

For success you need location, location, location and good prices

The largest food company in the world and the largest cement company in the world would like a word, along with all these tiny mom and pop global banks, insurance, and pharmaceutical companies that employ practically everyone on this forum.

What do you mean for Swiss, fried is usually frowned upon? Ever had a Schnitzel or a Rösti? Traditional Swiss cuisine is seriously unhealthy. Maybe the Swiss just thought KFC was shit, which it generally is, although after closing time its bloody delicious!
