Web design company recommendation

Hello, has anyone built a website and can recommend the web design company they used? I am looking into building a 2 sided marketplace and I am at a loss as to how to select a web design company to approach for a estimate of costs.
I'd really like to hear from people who could recommend a company they have worked with to build and design a website.

Also, has anyone tried/done this using a company from outside of Switzerland. If yes, is this something you would advise, or would you advise against it?
Thanks for any help.

Re: Web design company recommendation

Good question.
Problem is probably the budget.
What's a 2-sided marketplace, BTW?

Re: Web design company recommendation

Against everyone's advice I used a company via Fiverr for a Drupal website and was very happy with the result. Only cost a fraction of what a Swiss web design company asked and it was finished within a week. Hiring people online is hit or miss and I suppose I got lucky.

Re: Web design company recommendation

Are you sure you are looking for a design firm or do you actually need a web developer?

I interviewed five developers on upwork lately and not one of them was honest - some made up the most bizarre claims on their references and skills. I have worked in IT long enough to spot them, but I think somebody doing his first project has an 80-90% chance to be taken for a ride.

A two sided market place is a place where you have two user groups so buyers and sellers for example. eBAY would be an example, as would be homegate.ch.

You can check out Wikipedia for the actual definition of a 2 sided market. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Two-sided_market

I assumed a web design company would also have a developer. is that not the case? I guess realistically I might need both, so a firm that has both of these would be what I would be looking for.

Thanks I look into that.

Rule of thumb: the more design focused, the more expensive they are. Top notch design is time consuming and therefore expensive. Finding some affordable developer through the typical online platforms like fiver or upwork is probably the cheaper part.

Re: Web design company recommendation

One has to be very careful, I agree, but for the small fee I paid, I was willing to take the risk. What helped me decide was communicating via Skype and Email pre-contractual agreement. It was easy to spot scammers that way.

OK, thanks.
But doesn't a market need two sides anyway?
Are there one-sided marketplaces? Three-sided??

You'll need both. Or at least a developer. My advice would be to leave out the designer, build a basic proof of concept as cheaply (and quickly) as possible and then if you have traction you can always work on the design later once you're sure people want what you are making

If you are on a limited budget then feel free to get in touch - I've worked with foreign developers and dev.shops on a few projects and have helped quite a few Swiss companies outsource. (I don't want any money & can point you in the right direction with a few contacts)

If you can be very, very clear about what you want (and can find an outsourced team with a track record) then this is definitely the way to go.

We used Amazee Labs. Expensive but excellent work: http://www.amazeelabs.com/en

I've also used freelancers from 99Designs for personal work. Good price and service- at least that was my experience: http://en.99designs.ch/

Very good post. And what shall we avoid ? What questions to ask?
I want to hire web developer/company which will do the website and later my seo. I get offers every week but It is hard to say which one is worth to pursue. Any tips?
