I feel for you. Back home I used to get out and find small shops where I could buy something to eat, or drink at the most impossible hours. But here this is such an alien concept...that will never work out (just laughing at the thought of an all night open shawarma place). Just improve your planning and foreseeing abilities when it comes to household consumption...store, store and you'll be fine.
Prepared frozen meals might come in handy one day when you're coming home too late; you know, things like this can save you. A proper fridge/freezer is also a must here.

you do not need a fridge if you have a decent cellar

I just wish some of the farmers would sell their own produce from small sheds - and just have an honesty box.
Many do, and eggs too. Since the butcher's closed we have a butcher from down the valley who comes up and sells from his refrigerated van once a week. Our 2 small independent supermarkets coordinate their closing hours so there is always one open- even Sunday mornings.

I bet there used to be a corner shop nearby- and it closed because no-one used it!

We got used to it

If demand was so high, there probably would have been such a shop already.
Note that Adliswil already has 4 supermarkets. Quite a lot for such a small place. Also, Sihlcity is very close.

Demand is becoming high enough so that there WILL BE such Shops within 3 years, all between Wollishofen Morgenthal and Adliswil Bhf

it's a short enough distance that I can still put them both in carriers

If only it were possible to know if there were local shops before you signed up for the apartment.

Wouldn't it be cool if Migros had mobile grocery stores operating out of the back of little trucks?

I bet they've never thought of that!

Quite likely. But they got replaced by super markets and shopping malls.

I'm just saying, there are pretty good reasons why someone might long to have a shop closer to their house than 1.5km. But we bought our house with that in mind... I can't imagine we'd get very far asking the Gemeinde to provide one after the fact.
I couldn't agree more, every location has advantages and disadvantages. However, OP seems to want to live in the relative green and still have all amenities withing stone-throwing distance. OP wants the advantages without the disadvantages.

There already is! Leimbach Sihlbogen Migros (2.7km from Sihlcity), it is then 1.3km walk to Leimbach COOP, it is then 2.1km walk to Adliswil COOP, then 300m to Adliswil Migros, then 2.5km to the Migros at Thalwil (top of the hill) or the one in Langnau. The COOP Pronto is 2km from the Adliswil COOP.

1.5km must be the absolute maximum you'd need to walk in that area.

We all moan how expensive it is here and go to the supermarkets to buy cheaper food, thus the small shops go out of business.

No pun intended, but there is evidently some truth in the saying "you can't have your cake and eat it !"

We live in a farming village so not only do we have farmers selling fresh produce but we also have a shop, which is part of the Volg group. It is a 5 minute walk from our house. There is also a gas pump, very convenient for the garden tools which need gas. Inside the shop there is a place to sit and have coffee.

There are many elderly people living in our village who walk to the shop, and families with toddlers, including several with twins. There are no hills to navigate.

Living 5 minutes from the German border makes it difficult for a shop like this to survive but I think many locals choose convenience over price.

Usually from people who weren't here 10+ years ago. Now THAT was a culture shock

I wonder where the OP is from and what their expectations are and why.
Living in Germany 20 years ago was a real culture shock. That was in the days when the shops were only open on Saturday afternoons once a month and even then only until 4pm.

I'm surprised nobody suggested the OP opens and operates their own local shop.

More income, more convenience. What more could one want?
