This is a common misconception of the officals in Switzerland when requesting information about self employment. You do not need a business plan at all. You might need a business plan to open a bank account and you will need a business plan if you want credit or you want to claim money from the unemployment office to support you while you start. Otherwise you need the AHV number and to register as self employed. Dependent on your line of business the requirements can vary but generally an initial short term contract is all that is required. By short term 3 months max or something that is longer that consumes only a couple of days per week.
The law gives the AHV/AVS considerable discretion in deciding on whether the applicant is indeed "self-employed". That discretion cannot be dismissed as "common misconception". It is a process, which gives the officials the powers to demand evidence and decide subjectively.

Re: Small Business / Self Employment complicated by employed status of main earner.

I am self employed with a B permit because I married my Swiss partner. I got my AHV # after registering Self employed and you must tell them when you start. I can stay self employed and the taxing is much easier as I have no employees. I do have an accountant(swiss speaks English) to do our taxes though. I just save my recepits log them in a excel file and she does the accounting/taxes now for me and my partner. I had to estimate what I would make this year and then every 3 months the AHV sends me a bill to pay into my AHV. It is not that difficult. I have a seperate bank account for my business also which is recommended. Hope it works out.
