True, i did think about that but thought if I just gave account number details they wouldn't know anyway.

Just called AHV, I am now more confused
I know this is a bit old but, I don't think you can have money paid into your husband's account with your name on it. You should check into that.

Is it really that expensive to open your own account? Have you tried opening a post account?

Re: Freelance AHV Contributions

Hi all: I'm in the process of applying as self-employed with the SVA Zurich. A couple of questions for you more experienced freelancers...

1) The amount I estimate as my income -- is that gross receipts or net income after expenses... And what can I consider expenses? I work out of a home office, so can a portion of my rent be deducted from my gross intake?

2) What happens if I estimate too high or low? Does that amount get reconciled at the end of the year and I receive a refund/bill? Any penalties for estimating too low?

3) Does Zurich require a business plan to be submitted? I already have 4 clients, so are invoices and contracts with them enough?

Thanks!

Re: Freelance AHV Contributions

Hi Keandro,

I'm still working my way through all this myself...

1. It looks like net income after expenses, rather than gross income. A German speaker helped me with the SVA form today, and it asked for income after allowable expenses. I saw an accountant last week who said that a lot of things are chargeable - he advised me to keep every receipt and then he'd see what wasn't allowable at the end of the year. The list included part of your rent - not sure how much right now - and part of any transport passes and mobile fees.

2. I'm sure you must be able to adjust your tax if you get it wrong - I think refunds have come up on other threads as well, about tax for employed people and additional income.

3. I don't know - as far as I can tell I need to submit invoices and contracts, but I haven't seen mention of a business plan. Then again, I am already in business and moving to Switzerland, not setting up from scratch.

Hope that helps
Arline

I think I need to speak to someone maybe a tax accountaint about all this, its all very confusing, I also still earn money in the UK which at the moment I declare over there. I didn't really want to go down the whole self employed route again, declaring all expenses as it was a pain in the arse in the UK and will be an even bigger pain in the arse here with language issues. At the moment I just want to invoice the bits i earn and make sure that I am legal and pay the tax owed on that money and the AHV contributions, if business over here picks up then i'd consider setting up properly as self employed again and declaring all expenses etc..

As for the UK income, i have no idea what to do there...

Can anyone recommend a good accountant?

Thanks again for all your advice.
The tax authorities are interested that you pay tax somewhere.
So if you declare your UK income in UK & pay tax in UK it should be OK.
It could get complicated if you earn huge amounts but I get the impression that you do not so should not become complex.

There are double taxation agreements between UK & Switzerland. So in the unlikely event that the Swiss authorities would decide you should have paid tax here then you would get it back from the UK.

My UK pension is/was taxed in UK for many years & I never had a problem. A couple of times I had to provide copies of UK tax documents here to prove I did pay somewhere!!
