I've had a Longines for over ten years now and it still holds up to scrutiny as a beautifully minimalist (uncomplicated by all the extraneous paraphernalia they insist on throwng into watches these days) and very accurate watch. I wasn't overly flush ten years ago, so it's a quartz watch. Hence, it's very thin and extremely accurate, varying by something like one second per annum.
I now also have an automatic Longines watch. Its accuracy is actually better than that claimed by its makers -- it gains about 60 seconds per month. Even certified automatic chronometers can gain a minute a month.
My conclusions:
- I don't see Longines watches as a compromise in any way.
- Self-winding watches are clever and all, and I've been very happy with my new Longines, but some can gain 5 seconds per day ... and that would get tiresome after a (short) while). I'd get lonely, turning up to meetings 5 minutes early just because I'd forgotten to resynchronise my watch after two months.
Go with the Longines and enjoy it. it's a beautifully made and timelessly styled watch. Just budget a minute every month to reset your watch.
