As long as you do not expect it to be stolen, there should not be any issue. You bring it to a shop and pay for the repair (as you do not have warranty documents...).

Hope that, as a luxury watch, it doesn't fail within the guarantee time.

Even if it does fail within the guaranteed life, the dealer should have a record of when it was purchased based on the serial number.

Thank you guys | | | | | Even if you don't have a receipt because it was a gift, watches usually come with some kind of warranty certificate. Have you asked your friend about it?

There is a ID for the watch that the owners name has to be filled in it, it's blank yet, can i fill my name in to this ID or just leave it as it is because if I travel maybe police ask for the Id of the watch!!!!!!!! | Quote: | | | | | Even if you don't have a receipt because it was a gift, watches usually come with some kind of warranty certificate. You should be fine unless:
1. It is stolen, whereby when it needs a repair, or new battery, the watch place will check against the database and report it to the police. Hmm, didn't work when mine was stolen some years back, batterymust have run out by now.
2. It is a fake, ie one of those made in Hong Kong Rolex'es, in which case when you take it in for a battery change, the dealer will hit it with a sledgehammer.
Wear it, enjoy it, and stop worrying about it.

indeed - stop caring so much. I have a watch that I never register (hey, I like my privacy) and it's been repaired once and had work done.
It's just a watch.

If the watch is an expensive good quality watch; a register is usually kept by the manufacturer (Rolex etc.).
You need to get in contact with manufacturer (web site perhaps) and register as keeper or go to a watch dealer of that make of watch.
Obtain a receipt from the person you bought the watch from (name, addresss of person and amount paid and get him to sign CHF xxxxx "received with thanks" just in case.

Hopefully your friend is honest and it is not a knock-off.

Thank you guys | | | | | Without sounding stupid, anything under Chf 25'000.-- will hardly be considered as a luxury watch here.
As somebody pointed out there should be some sort of registration document included with the watch, depending on the type. This may be to include on the watch makers register, such as Patek Phillipe or it maybe just to get contact details for spam mail. You also get a "registration card" when you buy a new logitech mouse.....

Is this really what would happen in this case? Would the dealer destroy the watch if they realize it is a fake?

You are supposed to confiscate the watch and not return it. If the customer wants it back you can call the police.

I suspect that they wouldn't destroy it, but they would almost certainly refuse to work on it. It depends a little bit on whether they thought you knew it was a fake or not.
If they thought you had unknowingly purchased a fake, they'd probably tell you that it was a fake. If they thought you were knowingly in possession of a fake (unlikely if you took it to a licensed dealer, but more likely if you took it to an independent jewellery shop), they may report you to the police.
I'm not sure what the law says about fakes in Switzerland. In the UK, it is illegal to buy or sell a counterfeit product, but not illegal to possess it. In France, on the other hand, ownership of a counterfeit product is a crime as well.
For those who have only seen "cheapy" counterfeit products, it's easy to dismiss the possibility of buying a fake product without knowing it. But there are higher-end counterfeit products, some using genuine movements, which are much harder to detect.
When we were on holiday in Turkey, we went looking for leather goods. To our disappointment, all we could find were knock-offs of designer bags. It's a shame, because the quality was stunning (and the bags, for knock-offs, weren't cheap -- 300-400 EUR). We wished we could buy something of similar quality that wasn't fake, but I guess that's not what the tourist market wanted. As everywhere in life, the supplier was producing the product the customer wanted...

The good ones (knock-offs) don't need a battery change. Then there are the bling customized real high-end watches- they are not supposed to do that either- but once it is yours how can they stop you? The watch is certified the bling addition isn't. But really, I would never pay over 25K for a watch unless it was an investment.
