buying a hotel in Switzerland

hello everyone!
I'm a non-EU resident looking to buy a hotel to run it and obtain the citizenship of Switzerland. I'm asking for your advice on the routing I should go through in order to save my time and money: what to start with and what to expect. The cash I can spend is up to 1,5m Euro.

Re: buying a hotel in Switzerland

Well doing a Business in Switzerland is one thing and obtaining the citizenship is another!!!

YOu need to have lived here for more than 10 years to become a Swiss citizen......Even if you have 1.5 Million Euro!

Welcome to the Forum
Im sure there are plenty of EF'ers who would be happy to consult you on spending your 1.5m Euro.

Im also sure a permit can be 'bought' for less than 1.5m Euro.

Re: buying a hotel in Switzerland

Is there a reason for the interest in hotels? Is that where your expertise lie?
I agree you will need to invest a whole lot more to be on a passport radar for Switzerland. And if there is no strong reason for hotels then there are better investments.

However you could just about buy an Irish passport for that ammount...

but it's not about spending cash for citizenship. It's about an investment to bring profits! (or is the tourism lately in downturn there??)

Just be aware that the cost for a nice appartment here can be around or more than one million...

So you want to spend a reasonable sum of money on buying a hotel here, but don't know the state of the tourism industry here?

I've got some magic beans on special offer this week...

Add a zero to your budget, as a 3 bed apartment in a nice area of a city/tourist spot can cost that, in Zug 1.5m€ won't even buy a 3 house.... hence most people here rent.

Re: buying a hotel in Switzerland

1.5M Euro is enough for a pension in the middle of a field in Switzerland....maybe. If this is to work you need to partner with a couple of people here who each have another 1.5M to invest and have some local expertise. Being a small hotelier isn't about knowing that much, but being able to work ridiculously hard to/and keep costs down. The margins can be very small in this industry. The "passport radar" has a lot to do with how many Swiss people you employ as well. To be honest I think you need to go back to the drawing board. A business begins with research, not a pile of money.

Re: buying a hotel in Switzerland

A man bought a small hotel nearby for less than 1.5 Euro, turned it into a brothel and is making mega bucks. His place gets raided from time to time, but he always finds new girls and pays the fine willingly.

Re: buying a hotel in Switzerland

There are a few smaller hotels (old but in good shape) here in Engelberg that sold a couple of years ago for a little bit more than 1 million CHF. Some ski bums from Sweden bought a couple of them, did some renovation on them and seem to be doing pretty well with the business. Probably not the best investment in terms of return but it provides them with a good living in a nice location.

Re: buying a hotel in Switzerland

hey thnx everyone. your concerns on the prices are more than reasonable, I believe. BUT isn't it possible to get financing from a bank, if it is about property? I hope it is!

Some honest advice. It's really not a smart idea to invest a chunk of cash of that size in a country where you know so little about the business or immigration practices. Why hotels and why Switzerland?
