I want to open a garderie in the Morges area targetting ex-pat families, to give them the kins of nursery services which are offered in the UK, so 7 til 7, open through the Summer etc.

I'm starting from scratch.

Does anyone know if you can do this on a B permit?

Do I need childcare qualifications or can I employ fully qualified staff?

I am intouch with the Vaud dept of jeunesse but the wheels move slowly and I wondered if you guys and gals had any experience of this already.

a) yes you can start a business with a B permit. the law only states that at least one of the founders of the legal entity must be a swiss resident.

b) i know that the regulations concerning a creche or nursery are extensive. you will certainly need to employ qualified staff, if not be qualified yourself.

c) as with everything else, there is a local mafia. do not expect anyone to make it easy for you to get in.

you can check out these guys, they specialize in advice about starting up a business and they can help you out with all the paperwork / registrations etc. They used to do a free 2-hours consultation for entrepreneurs, not sure if they are still doing it though

Not sure about the permit side. But some friends of ours tried to do similar (but with French language) in Lausanne area and it didn't go too well.

You need to follow the SPJ rules to the T, and then there is also likely some local issues/inspections/certifications, etc. All costly and time consuming for sure.

Our friend had no experience in daycare, and while maybe possible, it definitely hinders the process. The major issue however was the premises, that killed the project. Real estate is very hard to come by, and finding real estate that conforms to SPJ norms for young children is near impossible, or will require major CHF to transform. You will require significant start up capital, and in friends case, no bank would loan to her mainly for lack of experience in childcare. Keep this in mind, not sure if you have deep pockets for this or not. There are SPJ rules on how many staff per child and the qualifications necessary for each of the staff.

please ctc the AWA, give them ur permit ref. no., then they will tell you if you can or not. they also speaks a little bit of English.

You might want to contact these people: www.capcanaille.wordpress.com They operate a group of bilingual day care centers for children 3 months to 6 years. Currently, the nearest to Morges is in Rolle. They have great experience in setting up private crèches and might franchise with you. Ask for Lisette or Peter. Good luck.
