Greg, were you able to register to be self-employed at your Community? I tried to do that last week, and the person at our Gemeinde directed me to a Zurich organization (AWA).

I have looked at that AWA website but it doesn't seem to be about self-employment registration, so now I think she might have misunderstood me (which is likely given the little German I know!).
I've not registered quite yet. I'm still figuring out what to do, but my accounting advisor is instructing me as what I need to do. In my situation, as Swissbob's post pointed out, I can always start a Sole Proprietorship as Mrs. gregv is Swiss.

This is the link you're looking for off the AWA page (I think):

Re: Small Business question - cleaning business

Seems as though you've had quite a bit of input already, lets cover the basic points first.

a) this cannot be treated as a generic question as no such thing exists as a generic example in Switzerland. Each scenario is specific and requires specific handling (welcome to Switzerland Baby!)

b) in your own Gemeinde/Kanton, seek legal advice on what your options are with creating/registering/owning & runing a business. Each Kanton and even Gemeinde will have its own set of individual rules and pre-requisites.

c) double-check this legal advice with another office. Even between legal professionals in the same Kanton, information differs (welcome to Switzerland!!)

d) make sure you seek the advice of an Accountant. This is to add a triple check to the advice you have been given in points b) & c)

If you do your homework well, you can avoid almost 95% of the pitfalls and legwork.

Good luck!

Val

Re: Small Business question - cleaning business

I just wanted to work for myself, but not hire any other people.

just me, I guess I wasn't very clear about that when I made that post.
sorry for that confusion.
Basically, I just wanted to know what I had to do to make sure I did this right, in regards to taxes. I'm not pulling in alot, but I wasn't sure how to do this NOT under the table. I didn't know where to start.

That's sort of a shame. I was waiting for you to become an international cleaning mogul...

Re: Small Business question - cleaning business

Hi all!
I have read through this thread and a few similar once about becoming self employed on B permit.
As a summary of my understanding, am I right that I will not be allowed to be a freelance consultant as a B permit holder, am Canadian , married to non-UE having B permit, staying in Lausanne? Or it depends on the mood of local authorities?
