2nd Annual Zurich Chili Cookoff - June 14th

Hi, see below info on a chili cookoff event we are organizing. We have some live music lined up, and of course the chili competition...all for a good cause. Website info: chilicookoff.ch

Get out your secret recipes as an American tradition comes to Zurich for the 2nd Annual Zurich Chili Cookoff! The cookoff is open to all and will be held on Sunday, June 14 from 1 to 6 pm, at the Sihlwald BesucherZentrum (Visitors Center). For those with more of a sweet tooth, this year we expand the cookoff to include a Cookie Bake-off (see info on website) for bakers young and old! Visit our event website at www.chilicookoff.ch for more info.

After the competition winner is named, all chili entries will be available for sampling. Come enjoy live music, enjoy some chili and all for a good cause.

The cook-off is also for families, as there's a large playground and a barn with farm animals adjacent to the pavilion and face painting for children. After the competition winner is named, all chili entries will be available for all to sample! Please bring your own food and drinks to the picnic. There are several open-pit fires with wood available for barbecue and many picnic tables. Also, there's a new cafe at the Besucherzentrum / Visitor’s Center with food & drinks available.

The cook-off is open to all and is a non-profit, we ask for a voluntary donation of 10 chf per person (without chili entry) or 20 chf for chili entry (one person and chili entry), all proceeds going to Kalangarai Indian Widow charity.

Rules & Info:
  • For this contest, Chili (aka chili con carne) should be homemade (no canned purchases from Coop or Migros accepted!)
  • On the day of the contest, all chili entries should be brought to the cookoff, cut-off time for entering your chili into the competition is 2.30 pm. Creative Chili nicknames are highly encouraged!
  • Please bring your chili in a pot that can be easily reheated over an electric heating element, also please bring a serving ladle or spoon.
  • The Chili entries will judged by independent Judges chosen prior to the event. Entries will be numbered to allow participant names to be anonymous to the judges
  • The Judges will decide and award for the following categories:
  • Overall and Runner-up for Best Overall Chili
  • Most Elusive Ingredient Award
  • Most “Unusual” Chili
  • A Chili should LOOK GOOD, SMELL GOOD and TASTE GOOD! The following criteria will be used by our less-than-expert judge panel: Color, Aroma, Consistency, Taste, and Aftertaste
  • All winners will receive trophies and UNLIMITED bragging rights for ONE year.
  • All Chilies will be available for sampling after judging is completed
  • GOOD LUCK and we look forward to seeing you at the cookoff!

Op, are you out there?

Will this event take place again this year? Ive got a hankering for some good chili, would like to support the charity, and am busy carving myself a chili spoon, from an even bigger spoon...

Sound great. Please don't shoot me - but will there also be vegetarian chili?

I shoot you.

That's like asking for vegan fondue or raclette.

Yeah, I've been trying to perfect the perfect vegetarian chili non-con carne since quite a while now, with pretty dismal results .
But then again I'm not the greatest cook.

I've got some recipes that (obviously) I've never tried, will post them later (recall eggplant being an ingredient), but I'm on the train at the moment.

I do make vegetarian enchiladas and rellenos, but that's as vegetarian as I go (and forget vegan, no cheese, no party)

Am not vegan - just don't eat meat since a few decades. If you can recommend anything then please let me know.

I've tried a few on-line recipes - but nothing delivered that 'bite', despite having taken hours to prepare and cook. I'm happy to invest the time for a good chili, can maybe get most ingredients near me from Globus etc. when pushed (depending on what they have on stock that day).

I've got a couple really good books of chili recipes, including some vegetarian ones, so I will scan and post later.

Personally, I think that using breaded eggplant could be a way to go to have decent texture.

Alas, I prefer black beans with smoked ham hocks (which I can only get up north, but I still have a bunch), but that's only vegetarian to few people.

(vegetarian to us means "contains vegetables")

I make a Veggie one all the time, Chili con Quorne (obvs I much prefer a chunky meaty one but this is pretty good)

Ingredients:
Olive oil
1 onion chopped
Clove of Garlic chopped.
Ground cumin 1 tsp
Ground Coriander seed 1 tsp
1/4 a tsp chilli powder or as much as you like heat
Smokey Paprika 1/2 tsp (only if not using smokey Chipotles or Anchos)
2 Dried Anchos deseeded and soaked in hot water then chopped into a paste
2 Dried Chipotle chilis deseeded and soaked in hot water then chopped into a paste
1 pkt, Quorn Mince, (The stuff from Migros not from COOP)
1 tbs Tomato puree
1/2 tin chopped tomatoes
1/2 tin Red Kidney Beans drained.
a good grate of of 75% dark chocolate
a little bit of the water that you soaked the chilis in or a little bit of vegi bouillon to stop the mix from becoming to dry.
Throw some chopped fresh coriander and a dollop of some nice thick sour cream or greek yoghurt on top.

You can buy dried Anchos and Chipotle chilis if not a bit of smokey Paprika works too.

In that order bung it all into a pan; but you know with a bit of thought, soften the onions and garlic, add the spices, then stir in the Quorn and add the rest, easy I usually improvise anyway... Hope that helps.

This sounds really good - but same old problem - I can't find the ingredients here e.g. smokey paprika, chipotles or anchos. But as you've mixed them with Cornature etc. I will go on the hunt again - thanks!
