English Stand-Up comedy in Zurich

There are efforts currently made to bring over some stand-up comediens to Zurich. I am a bit late in posting this as the first show was last night - and it was brilliant. The comedians are all great. I'd seen Brendan Burns (from last night) before and it was a real treat to see him in Zurich.

More info in : www.thefunnylaundry.ch

Currently there are three fortnightly shows planned - a trial run to gauge support. First was last night, the next:

So 28. Mai, 18 Uhr Guy Stevens presents:
The Funny Laundry
with Russell Howard (UK) and Craig Campbell (Canada) Washing-up some of the best funny money makers in the english speaking stand-up comedy world! For Tickets call 078 618 78

Finish your weekend or start the week being entertained by the very best international englisch speaking alternative Comedy und Cabaret artists at the first dedicated english speaking Comedy night in Zurich.

If you have a funny bone in you, I urge you to check this out.

Re: English Stand-Up comedy in Zurich

Hi Nanda,

I'd love to go to this, but not really into spending an evening doing some heavy duty passive smoking. What was the venue like and how were the smoke levels? Was it say, at restaurant level or night club level?

Re: English Stand-Up comedy in Zurich

Hey Mark,

Wow, for a second there I thought you'd been showering your love onto your neighbour's cat a wee bit much.

At the comedy, we were sitting right in front as the back filled up quick, so I don't know how bad it was at the back, but certainly we had close to none. Even just walking around, I didn't notice much. I would say it would be restaurant level smoke. Certainly not a pub level or night club level where you have to wade through it.

For me though, it wasn't noticeable. But I'm pretty sure it's a smoking venue.

You'll just have to join us right up front.

~ Nanda.

Hi Nanda,

In that case I'll be there. Are you going this Sunday?

Mark

P.S. Remember that my neighbour's cat - while very rotund isn't quite that big and has a cream coloured coat

Hi Nanda,

Did you reserve your tickets in advance or just decide on the night? I went to the site, and it just mentioned that there was an Abendkasse, but this was only mentioned as the place to pick up your reserved tickets. There was also a link to a website for the funny laundry, but it didn't work...

Re: English Stand-Up comedy in Zurich

Hi mark

have no fear! the auditorium is NO SMOKING......you can breathe easy; though the bar/foyer area is available for all chest wrenchers should they so have the urge......

you will also find that there is a wine and beer bar IN the auditorium so you can get a drink during the show. which is nice and sociable without being too pretentious....

and sorry that the maiers website isn't quite the biscuit with the reservation thingy....all will be in good working order for our regular night starting in september......just turn-up as early as you can..... between 6 and 6.30 to guarantee a good table as it's open seating once you've bought your ticket and you need to hang your hat/coat/trousers over a chair or three to bag a tasty vantage point!

look forward to seeing you there.......please do come and say hello......check my description and you'l recognise me in an instant!

No smoking in the auditorium? I'm falling off my chair... I'll be there for sure in that case!

Re: English Stand-Up comedy in Zurich

Right, looks like there's going to be quite a few of us going this thing.. Maybe we should get organised with a meeting point/time or something?

Maybe we should get there early so we get seats near the front. Hang on - the front? Nanda - are you sure about this? Anyone who's been at the front at London's comedy club knows that this isn't a good idea

Nanda - since you've already been to this thing, and you've already got your own crowd (Just 2 of you, or more?) do you want to be the official leader for the englishforum members who are coming? I just did a quick headcount and I count 6 excluding you.

Re: English Stand-Up comedy in Zurich

Golly Gosh! A crowd in the making! Great!!

Actually, I only dropped-by because I just wanted to follow-up your previous health concerns regarding chimney-heads in public auditoria.......apparently the swiss government are going to impose an outright ban, UK styleeee, before the end of this year (you see! they CAN work fast when it suits them!).........which means that the pampered Asocial majority such as your good self have won the day and the black lung pollution junkys such as I are to be banished to a life of calvinistic (oh! how very appropriate for our adopted home!) exterior fumigating forevermore...........which in the winter is going to be a right f***** p***-***, let me tell you..........

So anyway, wherever we shall be holding this little fortnightly jamboree from September it is more or less assured that you will be able to get a free laugh for yourself outside the venue looking at the poor, foolish tar-stained loons hopelessly dragging away whilst freezing their bits off confident that your own chest bags will be clean, warm and safe within the Laundry of Laughs!

Look forward to seeing you and yer chums on Sunday!

Ta-ta for now.......

= )

Re: English Stand-Up comedy in Zurich

Hey Laundry man,

I bet you a big pile of something fancy and expensive that there will be no outright ban of smoking by the end of the year. Even if the government wants to act fast they can't because everything has to go before the people. They may talk, they may mumble, they may have good intentions.... Remember that smoking is allowed in the Zurich government assembly itself, and they recently decided to do nothing about changing it.. So looks like you can go ahead and poison yourself for a bit longer

well..........I hope you are right (cough-cough!)......though I understand that as a health issue it can receive 'special' treatment and be fast-tracked as a referendum issue...... = (

Re: English Stand-Up comedy in Zurich

Well .. I survived Brendan Burns up front - and so did Dom actually.

I don't really mind where we sit but the seats are mostly along little tables so fitting 6 on a small table wouldn't really work. I propose we just turn up and see how the arrangements work out.

So how about this - I'll aim to be there around 6:30 at the bar that everyone has to go through. Please come and say hi. I have no idea what I'll be wearing but I look indian and I'm short. Oh, I'll have my South American bag with me (can't miss this one). And Nanda is my real name. So come up and say hi and I promise I'll let you get through your first sentence before I bite. Only kidding. Honest.

It should be a really good crowd. If you can't find me, Guy's the one walking around looking important. He can point me out.

~ Nanda.
Guy - if you need help setting anything up, send me an email.

Re: English Stand-Up comedy in Zurich

Update: It was a great night. Some good laughs were had. It was a mixed Swiss/expat crowd from what I could see.

It seemed like half of the people got into it and responded well, and the other half didn't, or at least weren't able to express their laughter. I'll leave you to figure that out for yourself... I guess the comedians found this to be a bit a tough crowd. When they said as much one guy yelled out from the back "Welcome to Zurich" which I found particulaly amusing

I understand that there will be another one in two weeks, then they start again in September.

I think you meant June, not May.

I don't think so - I think it is the week after. Check the website to be sure..
