Want to experience the best of Provence on a short 4 day break? If you have a few days of annual leave free (it’s only 2 days!) and you think your boss wouldn’t mind you turning up to work at 9 - 9.30am on the Monday morning, then this trip is for you! Think warm climes, fine food and incredible scenery. Lovely!

From Aix-en-Provence to Arles, Saint Remy to Nimes, immerse yourself in the irresistible charms of Provence, across landscapes that inspired Vincent van Gogh. Discover Gothic architecture in the walled city of Avignon, where the Pope once took refuge, stroll past an ancient multi-storey aqueduct at the Pont du Gard and cycle among pink flamingos frolicking in sandy reed beds of The Camargue. The medieval villages, captivating scenery and sumptuous food and wine of this region make for an unforgettable 4 day adventure.

The idea would be to meet at the Basel SBB at 10am, Thursday October 15th and transfer to the Basel airport. The flight from Basel to Marseille leaves at 12.25pm and arrives at 1.45pm.

Upon arrival (Thursday afternoon) pick up your hire car from the Marseille airport (optional cost) and drive, for 1 hour through picturesque lavender and sunflower fields to Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, your home for the next 2 nights. Your accommodation is in twin rooms, with an attached bathroom. After checking in, why not explore the area where Vincent Van Gogh was inspired to paint some of his famous works. Return to Saint Remy and visit the asylum where Van Gogh spent the last few years of his life. You can also visit Nostradamus’s house (he was born in Saint Remy) and, of course relax in your family run guesthouse.

As a day trip on Friday, there are options to drive to the hilltop village of Gordes, onto the magnificent walled city of Avignon before returning to your accommodation in Saint Remy.

On Saturday, pack your bags and head to the Roman town of Nimes (1 hour), where you’ll stay the night. Your accommodation is in twin rooms, with an attached bathroom. Explore the town Roman amphitheatre and relax in a side walk café. In the afternoon, jump in the car and head to the nearby town of Arles, visit the Pont du Gard and marvel at the scenery of The Camargue.

On Sunday, explore a bit more of Nimes and drive to Aix-en-Provence (2 hours), where you’ll spend the night. Your accommodation is in twin rooms, with an attached bathroom. Drop off the hire car here. Explore the delightful ‘Aix’ and relax in the late afternoon sunshine.

Early on Monday morning (4.30am!) take a taxi (40 minutes) from your hotel in Aix-en-Provence to the Marseille airport for the 6.30am flight back to Basel. The flight arrives at 7.50am, Monday October 19th so this should give you just enough time to make it back into work for 9 – 9.30am. Hope your boss doesn’t mind!

The per price is 420 CHF and covers a return flight from Basel, 4 nights in a 2/3 star hotel (twin rooms) and detailed trip notes. This trip is self guided. Breakfast at all 3 hotels are included in the price, but dinners and lunches are not. The price of a 4 person hire car would be around 400 CHF for 3 days. This is not included in the trip price. This price includes insurance, taxes, tolls and petrol. 100 CHF per person for transport isn’t bad!
