Hi Gary
Great post! Very pro-active and very helpful, you've actually prompted me to go direct to the Sixt site rather than fight my way through comparison sites.
I do have a question however, I need a car for a couple of weeks in Mallorca (pick up/drop off at Palma airport) and found this under the T&Cs:

"Premium Location Fee
A Premium location fee of EUR 34.22 occurs for rentals at airport (applies for off-airport and on-airport-branches) and train stations per month or part thereof."

I haven't seen this before. Is it an additional fee on top of the quoted rental price? What is it for?

Also, is there a way to narrow the search by number of doors? A few times, the search returns a car (e.g Opel Corsa) which shows a photo with 4 doors but when you go into the detail, the vehicle on offer (or "a similar car of the same category") states 2 door. This can be quite frustrating as "Economic" and "Compact" cars can be either and I definitely don't want 2 doors. Any ideas?

Thanks for your help and this really useful post !
Premium location fees are charged because a company pays higher property rental fees etc when they have a presence at an airport, train station or surrounding areas.

The premium location fee is already included in the quotation where the charge applies when booking directly with Sixt. I guess this can be a bug bear when booking third party because often in the small print it say "premium location fee payable locally" But like I said @ Sixt we include it

I can see your point regarding the doors, you have to select the vehicle to see the detail. This is extra effort required on your part and as we'd love for you to book with is, our job is to make it easy for you to do so. Therefore I am very grateful and will pass on your valuable feedback to our internet Team. On the U.K site you can hover over vehicle to see the details.

I hope I've answered your questions and remain at your disposal if you have more or need any help arranging the booking.

So I hired a van from the lovely Sixt team in Zurich and lo and behold I get a cool upgrade, to something beefy looking (in the van world, beefy is important). Unfortunately, the thing was too vast for the joys of Swiss underground car parks. No problem: the chap on the desk downsized me! Even in downgrading, Sixt made me happy. Cheers to a genuinely pleasurable customer experience.

This gushing praise may seem strange to some newbies to Switzerland, but customer care happens so rarely it's a pleasure to publically say Thanks when it does.

Hello Gary,

I was wonding if you can tell me the position Sixt takes on private parking company parking tickets that are issued during a rental. I have not been issued any, just wondering if you pay them on behalf of the renter.

edit - this is of course for rentals taken in UK ! I recently took a sixt rental from LHR but no one could give me a positive answer

This will depend on where the fine is issued. In the U.K we pay on behalf of the hirer and in most cases re-charge his / her credit card.

In Switzerland and France I am sure we do not receive copies of the fine only a request to pass on the driver data to the issuing authorities ( we charge an administration fee for this additional service to the hirers credit card ) however the responsibility to pay the fine is then that of the hirer, whom the issuing authority contacts directly.

Do you have a friend who is thinking of leaving the car parked in a control area to save a few Euros......tell him or her that the authorities will track him down like Tommy Lee Jones in the Fugitive

I hope this information helps.

hi Gary,

no friend involved, just for my own info....

but thats just it - it is not a fine, at end of the day its an invoice.

i asked because some rental companies just bin them, some treat them the same as council tickets or speeding fines.

Ahh...I see

In this case, in the U.K if we receive an unpaid fine ( perhaps for example exceeding a 2 hr stay at a retail park ) we would pay the fine and charge the customer.

would you be able to check with someone that deals with fines etc to confirm?

EDIT: dont worry about checking....just looked at the UK T&C's it only mentions fines and offences, nothing about private tickets so even if i were to be fortunate enough to get a private ticket at a retail park there is no obligation from sixt etc to pay it.

On the rental agreement you are accepting charges for all items relating to the hire, a private fine would fall under that. If you wish Sixt not to pay the fine then you should contact the office very soon after the fine is incurred.

Re: Car hire / Sixt - Any Questions

My husband just rented the Mercedes E-Class from SIXT in Zurich. The Navigation system was in German. Google results said that the only way to change the Mercedes Nav. to English is to get another DVD...Is this correct? Can they change them at the SIXT locations or are they only available in German in Zurich? Curious for next time. Thank you.

Re: Car hire / Sixt - Any Questions

hi Gary,

apologies for the repeated replies, i have done quite a bit of digging on this subject and found out a few things which has clarified all i need to know and hope it might be of assistance for you and some of your future UK rental clients from this forum as well ?

no offence intended or meant but many people call private tickets "fines" and believe they are issued by an/with authority, and have the same legal standing as tickets issued by councils (PCN's penalty charge notice) or police (FPN's fixed penalty notice). Private tickets are just an invoice with no legality.

1.8 milion private tickets were issued in the UK last year, 660,000 were not paid, out of those not paid 49 resulted in court action, over half of the cases were lost in court, in favour of the individual

A good look at the sixt T&C's charges section proved to be quite vague compared to other rental companies eg hertz or enterprise

7.1.5 all fines and court costs for parking, traffic or other offences,
including any costs which arise if the vehicle is clamped, and
any civil penalty payable for the transport of illegal
immigrants under immigration control legislation. You must
pay the appropriate authority any fines and costs if and when
the authority demands this payment. You will
be responsible to pay our reasonable administration charges
which arise when we deal with these matters.

the private ticket is not a parking/traffic fine, is not an offence or a penalty and private companies can never be an authority, using the strict wording of law.

i also came across this advice from the fleet management trade body ( who should know better to mention the F word!)

http://www.fleetnews.co.uk/news/2009...s-urged/30698/

And also this posting regarding sixt and a private ticket, having read through it looks like the renter was prepared to start legal action

http://forums.pepipoo.com/index.php?showtopic=62531

Please don take this as anti sixt, its not in any way or sense.

I have been purely trying to get an answer based on fact and no one was able to do that so far.

maybe the aboves assists someone and helps them save some money as it appears rental cars are easy targets for private tickets given they are paid (in general) without question.

The setup was only for the other controls in the car, not the Nav.

Same situation but not praise for it....

I also got an 'upgrade' on a van hire but in my case its not a good thing.
I measured the stuff i wanted and picked the smallest van to fit.
Sadly i got an 'upgrade' to the largest van they do, some 3.5tonn tail lift monster.
I asked for the size van i hired but was advised none smaller where available.
As i was driving to the UK and back this not only cost me time (about 110 kph was the max) but the fuel bill was pretty horrendous, chf 600 for the return trip!, which i guess is not a surprise as the the van has the aerodynamics of a brick with no wind deflector on the roof!
If Sixt had advised me via email before hand that the size van i ordered would not be available then I could of gone else where and got a van i wanted, instead i was left with no choice as the train was booked for that evening and no way i could find another van to book in such as a short time.

SO, if your renting a van may i advise you call Sixt a few days before hand and ensure you get the van you ordered, not one 3 times larger than what you ordered!!
