Anyone on their way to being bilingual? Here's something I made that could help.

Probably like many here, I moved to Switzerland only being able to speak English. After a few years my German is improving, albeit slowly. So recently (well about a year ago) I decided to create an App to help people like me (and possibly you) improve a second language.

I came up with “Parallel Books”. Essentially it displays two translations of a book beside each other and keeps the books in sync as you read.

If you’re learning a language, or if you want to practice a second language, and also for non-English speaking people learning English, you’re probably going to like it. And it’s all free, with no ads, so you’ve got no excuse! (and also hopefully that means that this won't be considered spam)

I made it all from from home, whilst looking after two pre schoolers, and I released it last week.

Check it out here: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/para...045596664?mt=8
Let me know what you think!

Cheers

Congratulations, Matt!

Yet another example of one of my great ideas that I never took any further due to lack of knowhow/lack of motivation/laziness... this struck me as a good idea a few years ago, although being old skool, I was thinking of a printed book. Good on you for conceiving and implementing this idea, and good luck!

Any plans to release your app on Android, the world's most popular smartphone OS?

Thanks, I had missed part of the link

Does it work now?

I also see a moderator has moved this thread to commercial, even though the post clearly explains that it is free.

I've downloaded Cinderella and Alice in Wonderland!
Looking forward to being transported back to my childhood, but in German.

Thank you!

I have downloaded the app! Looks great. Books might be a bit too hard for me, but will give it a go! Some easier books would be cool, Roahl Dahl ... Things like that!!

Yes! Roald Dahl would be great! I'm going to be adding some books soon that are used by UK schools for German teaching, so they should be a good level for learners too

Re: Anyone on their way to being bilingual? Here's something I made that could help.

I couldn't see Cinderella, but have downloaded the app, and have chosen Alice in Wonderland, and Snow White to get me started :-)

I'd also like to say thank you!!! I love reading, and keep saying that I should read books in German during my daily commute to help improve my (frankly quite poor) language skills, but have never got round to it because t would just be such a faff to have to keep looking things up to find out what they meant. I no longer have any excuse :-)

Great!

Cinderella is "Aschenputtel" in German. I've used the original language titles for the covers

Well done. You are an inspiration. will try the app later.

if I may ask how did you set up the apple iTunes/iBooks account from CH. I tried a year ago to set up a account in the iBooks store to sell books but needed a US bank account (which I did not want to do). I know it is off topic.

No problem asking. Although I'm not much help, because I'm not using iBooks, only iTunes. I use a New Zealand back account which they accepted with my registration, however I don't use it because the app is free anyway..

I expect that if it is an issue, then other people have had it too. Perhaps google to see what other people have done?

I've just added the first couple of books that are currently used in UK schools for learning German. (these ones are A-Level and Pre-U)

They are:

Die Verwandlung, and
Frühlings Erwachen

cheers, and happy new year everyone

And I didn't forget you guys in the French part, I just added a French book used in UK Schools too:

Bel Ami, by Maupassant

Here is the trailer from the film adaption a couple of years back (clearly the version in Parallel Books is a book, not a film, but just for reference) :
