Staufacher is probably his best bet .... or Amazon , the Bern branch of Staufacher certainly carries them.

Re: Hiking Books in English

If you dont like ordering over the interweb, then just find the book/books you are after and pop into Bucher Balmer in the Metalli in Zug and give them the title.

They will order it for you and you can either pick it up from them (ask for a phone call when it arrives) or do what i do and get it delivered to your house with an orange slip.

Just be very clear with them as my last book did not arrive and i went in there to complain, and they had it sitting there behind the counter. Your german is alot better than mind though, so maybe it wont be an issue.

Re: Hiking Books in English

Lonely Planet has a "Walking in Switzerland" book.

The Mountaineers had a couple of books earlier, but they seem to be out of print right now:
  • Marcia and Philip Lieberman's Walking Switzerland - the swiss way ISBN 0-89886-511-5
  • Vicky Spring & Harvey Edward's 100 Hikes in the Alps ISBN 0-89886-333-3

Re: Hiking Books in English

For the hiker interested in seriously exploring a region there are few better guides than Cicerone's Walking and Alpine Skiing Guidebooks for Switzerland. I have used two of Kev Reynolds' books: Chamonix-Zermatt - The Walker’s Haute Route and Walks In The Valais – Switzerland and can recommend them highly. I expect his other books to be equally good.

Another excellent publisher of regional guidebooks is Rother, a German publisher that has many English titles.

Re: Hiking Books in English

Can anyone recommend a hiking book in English that covers the area around Villars/Gryon? TIA

Re: Hiking Books in English

Missed this when you originally posted it. No books in English that cover the region specifically, and my guess would be that a generic hiking book would have little information on that region. The Villars/Gryon Tourist Office has a section on Summer Hiking, the details include map, estimated hiking time, elevation gain/loss and GPS coordinates, complete with Google Earth track.

I would also buy the SwissTopo 1:50,000 map with hiking trails, 272 T St-Maurice. I suspect that when you actually get there you will find a locally produced map with a selection of hikes.
