We are two businesses under one roof, located in the train station building. I mainly sell English books at discounted prices (10 Fr – 15 Fr) and when you buy 2 you get 1 free. I also have lots of 2nd hand English books,(fiction & non fiction) have Swiss souvenirs at very reasonable prices and carry a selection of birthday & greetings cards in English. My colleague sells Dutch books, Dutch speciality foods e.g (Hagelschlag, (chocolate sprinkles) Pindakaas (peanut butter), Stroopwafels and more. She also sells greetings cards and has a line of novel gift ideas. I have lots of different offers on from time to time all of which will be posted here on this new thread. We are a 15 min train ride on the S4 from Zurich HB, and if travelling by car, there are several car parks close by. So please come down to visit us, and you’re very welcome to have a brew with us while you browse around. More info at www.brew-and-browse.ch Cheers Catherine

Oh yes..
I just have to comment on your signature.. "Practice safe eating: always use condiments"
I was once traveling to the States with a female Swiss friend of mine and we had a layover on the eastcoast so we were walking around the airport and came to a snack stand which sold churrios.
Next to them was a sign which read: "Contains no preservatives". She stood there starring at the sign with this incredibly confused look on her face and asked me what was that suppose to mean..?! When I realized what she was asking about I nearly wet myself from laughter because préservatif is the French word for condom..!!

Funny how things like this crop up.
Just last week, on the phone to a woman calling about a prospective order from a frozen foods delivering company.
I had recently ordered a catalogue from them, in which I wanted to know, (Scuse my rotten High German, I barely use it and was speaking in S/German at the time), "Was für präservativs darin ihn versteckt sind?", I was wanting to find out about the preservatives that are used in the frozen goods.
I knew, even as I was saying it, that it was wrong (should take my signature more seriously I guess), when my sixteen yr old daughter walked in, just as I was putting the question and shot me such a look of horror and embarrassment on my behalf, that it was really quite difficult, amid my own guffaws, to continue with the conversation.
To the woman's credit, she didn't even miss a beat and assured me the products contain no added "Konservierungsmittel".

And is a "layover" a Freudian slip too... or like a stopover?

Sorry to hark back to this, but it reminded me of my friend who was staying with a host family in Montpelier, France, many years ago.
She was in the kitchen one day with the "Madame" and, whilst watching her cook, happily tried to explain that her own mother was an excellent jam maker - or "preserves" as we say in England.
I think you can see where this is heading..........
- "Ma Mère fait les préservatifs......au gout de fraise ou framboise..."
So, my friend whose jam-making mother was actually the vicar's wife, stood there explaining to this perplexed French lady that her mother made condoms - strawberry or even raspberry......
Oh dear!!

I'm sorry if anyone had planned to nip down. We are open Mon Tue and Wed as normal though. Everywhere is just so quiet at the moment isn't it ???? |

Happy New Year to everyone. I'm going over to UK in a few weeks time to order some more books for my store. If anyone has some titles they would like me to look for (fiction & non fiction), please email me and I will see if the supplier has them in stock and I can put them in with my order. I'm going to order a lot more childrens chapter books this time, so if there are certain childrens books you would like just let me know.
Email me at Catherine@brew- and-browse. ch by 22nd Jan at the latest and I'll do my best.
Cheers
Catherine
