Our apartment in Istria, Croatia is available to rent again this summer. The beautiful Istrian peninsular is much closer than you think, situated just over the North East Italian and Slovenian borders. We have driven there several times from Zurich which avoids the hassle (and expense) of flying with (or without!) small kids and means you have the flexibility of having a car when you get there.

There are plenty of different route variations you can take, but the quickest and most direct (from Zurich) is Gotthard Tunnel, Milan, Trieste, Pula.

We've also taken more scenic routes doing an over night stop in Lake Garda or in the Dolomites - longer drive but very scenic and you can take it easy over two days making the stop off part of the holiday.
