| | | Re: Valentine's Day Rant (and what to do) | Quote: | | | | | Alright fellas...(and I do strictly mean fellas..ladies, you can watch but I am about to teach Woman101 so why don't you guys just grab a tall decaf Latte and sit this one out). Valentine's Day is just around the corner and I'm cerrtain many of you are already doing some higher mathematics to figure out what the significant other would want in order to maintain peace and quiet at home. First of all, Valentine's Day is a loose-loose situation for both men and women. Men feel obligated to do something special or buy something special for their partner...women on the other hand, are subjected to the most insipid and thoughtless variety of gifts. Teddy bears, roses, a card which proclaims how much he loves you, the occasional box from a jeweller and a fancy "overpriced" dinner...either way, the gift is expected and thus it is more a cliche than about having a nice time with the loved one. Another issue is that many women are in an "unofficial" competition with each other. Meaning that it is also about braggin rights..."oh look, Bobby brought Linda to Spagos and gave her that big diamond ring...that b*tch don't even deserve it..she slept with his brother etc." You have to realize, that she'll initially look bad as you refused to go with the flow and give her a stupid teddy bear along with an overpriced dinner and a thoughtless gift. However, to make things right, here is what you do. Tell her 1-2 weeks in advance that this year things will be different and that you're not willing to give her a gift she wouldn't truly enjoy...and that you have something in store for her but you're not going to tell her when'll she'll get it nor what it is. This will give you the overhand and she'll be wondering what has gotten in to you (she likes that because you pose another challenge..and don't we all know how much women love challenges). Now, she might be incessantly breaking your ***** trying to figure out what it is that you got planned. That's when you say "You'll see..but I'm certain that you're going to like it". At one point, she'll get fed up (usually after 2 months trying to figure things out)...and she'll let you know "Fine! I don't care about the stupid gift anymore!!" followed by *Stomp Stomp Stomp* and other random ruckus...(anytime after) 2 month after the outburst is when you're on. She'd have forgotten about the gift/surprise (whilst keepinig all that built up anticipation) and you had ample time to prepare for it. Now for the gifts: -prepare a weekend getaway (easy to plan ahead and you'll save loads of money as your timing is flexible) - a voucher for a spa treatment followed by a small gift underlining your love and devotion (like some earrings, decent necklace etc.) - a nice dinner followed by a concert that she'd really like to attend I mean possibilities are endless....use your imagination. It is however important not to do too much at once...otherwise she'll experience a sensory overload, gets too emotional and comes up with something stupid lilke..let's have another baby..or let's do this, let's do that etc etc. Whenever you deliver your gift, she'll be really surprised as she didn't expect this one at all and will love you for your creativity, thoughtfull expression of your love, for treating her different and for appreciating her as an individual...and this will underline your bond that you have and beat that stupid Valentin's Day rush whilst differentiating yourself from the rest. Her friends will now say "Bobby took Linda out to Spagos for no apparent reason and gave her some earrings...that is so beautiful, why can't Steve do this with me...." -LIB | | | | | Go get me a coffee. Real coffee. Not that latte sh*t.
I have left all sorts of hints around for birthdays and Christmas and all I've ever heard was grief about not picking up my sh*t. My book wish list on Amazon is longer than the US tax code, and just as undisturbed.
I consequently ignore Valentine's Day, but take the opportunity to surprise my spouse with gifts whenever it strikes me. Believe me, surprising someone with an unexpected present beats handing someone a generic present on some industry-created holiday like Valentine's Day.
My coffee cup is empty. Ah...here comes the refill. | | The following 2 users would like to thank Brass427 for this useful post:

I said to Hubby that I don't want anything for Valentine's day.
How generic! It sounds fake, it taste fake and it looks fake.... It most be fake.
I have a loving and wonderful hubby all year around. Yep, he is a pain in the a*s but that is part of his charm. And you know what else it is part of his charm? Not needing a generic marketing day to do nice things to show his love to me all year around!
I am a lucky woman.

So much better than a heart shaped box of chocolate | | This user would like to thank nic80 for this useful post:

@LiB , @Joey82 , @Wasted , @Meisie
None of that smoochie, lovey-dovey music for me, so here's Taio Cruz "Higher" ft. Kylie Minogue.
Cruz is about to knock Wentworth Miller off my "Numero Uno Man" top spot - oooh yeah!
Happy Valentine's Day y'all and then some !!!! | | This user would like to thank ximix for this useful post:

Sorry, but I like it!! Yes, I feel loved the rest of the year, but it is an opportunity to give and receive just a little extra in the way of sweet and meaningful gestures.
PS - still waiting to hear what LIB did .......

| | | Re: Valentine's Day Rant (and what to do) | Quote: | | | | | I don't celebrate random holidays...nor do I celebrate my Bday. I could care less, I figured out the essentials in life...Valentine's Day is BS. It's an overhyped, over commercialized wannabe holiday when men are forced to come up with something and splurge. If you are willing to do that, then be my guest..I for one am not and I am perfectly happy with that. | | | | | oh, really? wiki says: The mid-19th century Valentine's Day trade was a harbinger of further commercialized holidays in the United States to follow.
bashing the US? be glad you didnt twitter that, did you? this barred you from the garden eden then...
