Valentines day in my opinion is a marital minefield! Some do, some don't. I don't buy stuff but if I make a home made burger on the day I'll make it heart shaped.
Give me a man that's considerate all year round and I'll gladly leave the presents to the inconsiderate barstewards.

bday, anniversary, x-mas is ok plus every now and then a nice unexpected surprise (present, dinner, short trip etc) is good for me. with economistos (god bless him) theory of It's the anticipation which is the real gift because it provides excitement for ages... 3 occasions full of anticiptaion and excitement are enough for real gifts. VD sucks. fin. cheers to LIB!

Like LiB, no valentine here either. But I have a plan:
I decide when people have birthday. The more I like someone, the more birthdays one will have each year.
If people need to be officially reminded to show their affection to their beloved ones, then official dates are obviously useful to them. I have no problem with that.

Hope I can make someone feel better about Valentine's Day by admitting that some of the best gifts I have ever received (on VD, birthday, anniversary, etc.) were the thoughtful, uplifting, and appreciative words written on the card (or on plain paper, which was fine) from my OH. Those words/poems on paper last forever and can be reread time after time, whereas the chocolates and flowers have a limited life.
So my general suggestion is to try your hand at penning a bit of poetry for your loved one this Valentine's Day!

for me this is the most important part of a present!!! i keep all i got and reread them every now and then, mostly when i put new ones to my collection. sometimes it reminds me whom i shall call again that i havent spoken to for some time as the cards words put a smile on my face...
