If you have a problem with smoking on the platforms, EMAIL THE SBB.
Oh, we can't have that. We couldn't possibly actually do something about the things which irritate us!

No, no... that wouldn't do at all.

This was basically the response:

Thank you for your e-mail. Many thanks for taking the time to express your opinion to us regarding smoking on railway property. I am delighted to see that you feel you can be entirely open and honest about your thoughts on this issue.

<SNIP>

I will forward your e-mail to those responsible, so that they are aware of all opinions being raised on this subject. With this in mind, I would like to thank you for the opportunity to comment directly.

Greetings from Berne.
Wow, that is impressive. I did not expect that well thought out and reasonable response from an agency like the SBB. Although perhaps I shouldn't have been so surprised. I've always thought that the SBB does an exceptionally good job.

Thanks for sharing this with us.

Probably means they have already received a decent number of emails on the subject and have gotten round to writing a standard response and even put it through google translate and then cleaned up the output a bit!

Still, better than average even if it actually boils down to "we're not going to do anything".

Carry a water pistol; anyone who sparks up in an area you deem to be innappropiate, kindly ask them to move on or put it out. If they won't, do it for them.

They'll get the idea.

Wouldn't advise this in Manchester though; stick to the Swiss train platforms, and you should be fine. Unless of course you soak DB on an offday - you'll not be doing it again.

Re: Smoking on the train platforms.uughh

Now this is what happenend to me in Zug at the train station on track 3: My son and I wanted to take the train. We got to track 3 and there are 4 seats. So I told my son he could sit down. A young man was sitting there, smoking. I didn't say a word or give him a queer look or anything. Guess what he did? He got up and moved away from my son. See, these people do exist.

2. April 2015, man smoking indoors at Chur station is arrested by railway police and later fined CHF 100, plus CHF 225 costs. (Fine could have been up to CHF 1'000 ) He is refusing to pay, and will go to prison for one day,

You mean those people in almost every other developed country in the world apart from Switzerland who think that there's too much smoking in public spaces?

One day eh? If I was him I would go for one day too.

But I would want to have it in writing that the cell door remains closed for 24 hours. No secret 2am door openings.

Yes quite a juicy thead. At the start there are heaps of groans. As a smoker I feel guilty smoking next to non smokers and will move if possible or put out my cigi or whatever I am smoking. Snif.

Re: Smoking on the train platforms.uughh

Must say I am a non smoker and get very irritated by smoke I can't avoid. However I think it is absolutely vital that smoking doesn't get a heavy handed carpet ban by the thought police.

Really I think non smokers need to stand behind smokers a lot more in ensuring this thing doesn't go too far. Like a national restaurant smoking ban. It is nice to walk into a specialised restaurant full of cigar smoke. I don't stay long, but it is nice to know these places exist still.

Another enjoyable pleasure I see here is people drinking beer on a train. These things are what make Switzerland special and (sadly) unique.

I thought beer drinking on trains was (nearly) universal. It has been on all the trains I've been on (though they're mostly in Europe).

Reading the frothy mouthed sanctimony on this thead makes me want to wander down to the nearest train station during rush hour and light up a fag just for lulz.
....don't forget the beer..

[QUOTE=Patsycat;2401651]It was even better when we could drink beer and smoke cigarettes on the trains!![/QUOTE

I think the cigarette smoke used to disguise the smell of perspiration on trains - I find trains unbelievably stinking of bodies these days.
Same with any closed area containing lots of people.
At festivals one cannot believe the stench in a warmed up tent with hundreds of people thumping about with their beers - but not smoking.

The smoke may not have been too healthy to breath in, but I find those sweaty body stenches even more obnoxious.
