What about train platforms ?
Train platforms in Switzerland are one big ashtray. Does that answer your question?

the following countries have implemented bans on smoking in enclosed spaces and/or workplaces and/or stricter regulations on selling of tobacco:

Except in outside seating areas in restaurants (often covered) and almost anywhere else where people frequent, the air here is thick with smoke.

Other countries may indeed have the same regulations but the bans seem to be working and/or people are just a bit more considerate than the Swiss. (I expect it's a bit of both).
Really - you felt quoting my posts riddled with "and/or"s was the best one to go for?

Your idea of thick is clearly very different from mine - thick smoke to me are the bars and clubs of the 90s where you'd be able to walk in - dropping the stinkiest of farts - and walk out with no one knowing!!

There is a time to be a militant anti-smoker and there is time to relax - and in 2015 non-smokers have never had it so good.

I'm not militant. It's just a lot better in other countries and noticeably worse here. The Swiss (not the expats and wannabe-Swiss on this forum) just don't give a s**t about people who don't smoke or who have kids (and they tell us so, too).

Especially on my balcony, but that's because I have a wood-fired smoker.

Most of them don't smoke, and have kids and grand-kids.

I'm an expat and a smoker, so it's not just the swiss that pisses you off. I do as well.

So just put that in your pipe and... well draw on it, but whatever you do don't light it.

The SMOKING BAN here is clear

----------------------------------------------------------------------
On 1st May 2010 new laws came into effect ......all closed rooms open to the public or used by several persons are smokefree
---------------------------------------------------------------------

---------------------------------------------------------------------
Restaurants, Bars, Discotheques, Nightclubs ------------------------ Separated rooms, so called FUMOIRS are possible if they are in conformity with the laws .........Full all Smoking places however are prohibited
------------------------------------------

That the Train platforms are regarded as OUTDOORS is regrettable but Train stations are SBB owned and under federal law

Well, if I'm sitting outside at a restaurant with my kids and you sit a couple of feet away and chain-smoke whilst we eat then yes, I would think that although it would be your right to smoke, you would be a bit of an inconsiderate s**t.

Yes, Wolli keeps quoting the law (yawn) but people used to be more considerate and wait until people had finished eating before lighting up, irrespective of the law.

Because it was pertinent to the discussion as to one of the reasons why people from North America and Western Europe have stopped coming to Switzerland yet the Chinese are happy to do so.

You know how a cornered dog is more likely to bite people? Well, perhaps some smokers are so pissed off with being hounded by puritans that they have decided to simply stop caring what other people think?

The ones here didn't care anyway.

And anyway, they're not hounded by me. I vent my annoyance on this forum.

Tourists from the rest of Western Europe and North America have NOT stopped coming to Switzerland. At the Street Parade and at the Glattbrugg Open Air there were thousands of them

And if you check realities https://www.zuerich.com/de/ueber-zt/...rich-tourismus vou can see that Britain and Italy each sent more tourists then China

Ask the hoteliers in the rest of Switzerland if you don't believe me. For years, Switzerland was the number one tourist country based on various factors. It wasn't in the top five this year.

But you are right, whilst there is a decline in the alpine areas, numbers are increasing in Zurich.

Here for reference

It's mainly because of the strong franc and the mediocre food and service but a lot of comments on review have also mentioned the heavy incessant smoking.

I would never have another extended holiday in Switzerland because of the lousy food and hotels etc and not because of the smoke but a two week break I just had in Italy was noticeably smoke-free. The Italians appear to take these things more seriously than the Swiss.
