This is wrong. The airport is owned 50% French Republic, 25% Basel-Stadt and 25% Basel-Land. And in practice the airport is actually primarily a Swiss run operation on French territory. 99% of the 99% you mention are Alsace people who speak German dialect. On the cargo-side for example, it is 70% Swiss. More than half of the passengers are from the Swiss side. And most airtraffic takes place under Swiss licences and under the BSL airport code, and only a minor part goes under the MLH code. Technical aircraft handling is mainly Swiss. Just look at the transit-road to BSL-CH apt : Police in charge is the St.Louis/Blotzheim Gendarmerie, but the road maintenance is conducted by the government agencies of Basel-Stadt. Go to the toilets. Installations of toilets on the CH side of BSL/MLH come all from Switzerland. And finally, Jürg Rämi is the Director of BSL/MLH airport.

Quite the other way round, to work more closely with the French side could save the Baaaslers heaps of money, but if you ever have realized the incredible arrogance of many of them towards the Alsace-folks, you may realize that believing in progress on that front is wishful thinking
Fair enough, but I'm confused by what you write. Half of what you wrote suggests that the French have a big part to play, another quarter of what you wrote is irrelevant - we're not talking about passengers or flights and where they are coming from or going to. Likewise sourcing of materials to make toilets is irrelevant.

e.g. "99% of the 99% you mention are Alsace people who speak German dialect"... so that would be French people, non?

Indeed, the ownership is 50/50 French/Swiss, from what you write.

I would also point out that I recognise German and Swiss German spoken with a French accent, and I have rarely come across an original "Basel" accent when dealing with staff there.

But in the absence of any stats, or the will to find any, I'll concede the point.

Last week I forgot a brand new 250ml bottle of contact lens solution in my carry on. Preparing to wave goodbye to CHF 20 I hopefully placed it in a clear plastic bag and into the scanner tray. The operator immediately seized the bottle as it came out, squinted at the text and then gave it back to me.

Definitely French

Well if any of us were, we probably shouldn't be flying out of the airport ...

Re: Switzerlanded! Expensive parking at Basel airport

You should spend 35 CHF and take the train to Basel SBB from ZH and then take the direct Bus 50 to the Euro Airport to save yourself the hassle.

I think officially F5 is shuttle busses, while F3 is walking. You can get a luggage cart in F3, and it's about a 4-minute walk from the terminal.

And if you think that parking at the airports of Basel and Geneva is expensive, come to Zurich The Zurich Airport company does not make any secret out of the fact that a good part of the parking fees are used to improve public transport. If if right now, parking F is heavily extended with two sizeable annex buildings.

Re: Switzerlanded! Expensive parking at Basel airport

As our flight was early (7.15) and we'd never been to Basel airport, we decided to stay over in a Hotel. Paid E159 for a nice room including parking for 2 weeks and taxi service to airport (including breakfast, but we had to leave too early). Carat Hotel in Weil am Rhein- excellent service.

Between 30 and 40% of the visitors of BSL/MLH (some odd 20% are Germans) are people from the Alsace, people who use French as their written language but either speak or at least understand German dialect very well. The ARE citizens of the French Republic

Ownership is 50% French Republic, 25% Kanton Basel-Stadt and 25% Kanton Basel-Land. Zero % Swiss Confederation.

Whenever visiting that airport, I always came/come accross people of "original Basel accent" there, more than enough of that tribe

I have never seen conclusive statistics, but on the CH-side of BSL MLH a good part of the employees ARE true Baaaslers

CHF 85 is is actually a good price! Here in Los Angeles, the same seven days would be about $105 USD, or CHF98 -- and that does not include the 8.75% sales tax added on...

85CHF for 7 days is a bargain (yes 45Euro is cheaper) but for 7 days this is not expensive at all. This is only just 12CHF per day so no idea how you can claim that as expensive

Try Sydney airport and it will cost 180CHF

If you hire a car on the French side you will not get a Vignette or winter tyres, as we know cars cost more to buy in CH.

I park in the white zone near the casino it's free, just 1 buss stop away!
This can't be right! It's too good to be true.

Is it possible to park near the casino in the white lines for more than one week? I'm sure someone will object?

White lines (don't don't do it).

Ticket to ride, white line highway
Tell all your friends, they can go my way
Pay your toll, sell your soul
Pound for pound costs more than gold

hey man i feel your pain but to be fair, you're not allowed to "you've been switzerlanded" yourself.
Not only that, all the airport is technically on French soil.

Re: Switzerlanded! Expensive parking at Basel airport

Yes it is comparably cheeper to park on the french side but just remember.. If you come back after two week holiday and your car battery is dead you might find out that your breakdown service e.g TCS won't come for you as your car is in France and not in Switzerland, therefore not covered. This can lead to a hefty tow fee...

I know someone that had that happen to them...

Also about the french car rental. As a swiss resident with a swiss drivers licence we are not aloud by law to drive foreign registered vehicles in Switzerland. This is true for a lot of european countries as well...

I bought my battery in Switzerland. It's Swiss-quality. It never runs down. I suspect it's secretly powered by nuclear energy.
