Secondly, I believe that it's not possible to train a wild animals with candy.
Dolphins, fish ?

Third, I don't believe that taking a wild baby animal from it's natural environment to do tricks for our bidding is a disgrace. This is a moral point of view, didn't think you needed "evidence" for that...
Not only a moral point of view at all but illegal in most parts of the world and has been since the 60's. Performing animals are almost 100% captive bred. The exceptions are not found in (our view of) the civilised world. All Zoo animals are captive bred with the exception of rescues.

Last, there are many report saying that a wild animal held in captivity although maybe not physically abused, fare very bad mentally due to the stress in its new environment. (That's why animals in e.g. Zoos all of a sudden just die, the can't coop with the new environment)
No, animals die for physiological reasons, not mental ones. Provide the right environment and they will last longer than in the wild as demonstrated by Bristol Zoo, Zurich Zoo, Longlete, etc etc.

I guess you think Monkey World are doing a shit job too?

Nice "discussing" with you...
Let me put it another way... look at the death penalty in the USA.

For years people argued about whether it was right or wrong, indeed they still are. The issue was that people were discussing it from a position based on what they felt was right or wrong, e.g. "an eye for an eye" vs. "thou shalt not kill".

It was only relatively recently, when a special commission was set up to discuss this in more depth (sorry can't find the link), that the debate actually moved on to the process involved: i.e. that some innocent people could be executed, making the process fallible, hence wrong.

You're stuck on what you think is wrong based on the emotional pull of taking an animal from the wild (although I'd guess that as a % the majority are born in captivity), that keeping animals in captivity is wrong (false assumption) and makes them unhappy (again, false assumption), beating animals is wrong (although in principle I agree, you should see what they do to each other in the wild...), and finally that all circuses are the spawn of the devil (I might agree with you there, but for different reasons...).

In other news, elephants must roam freely sometimes, otherwise the "no elephants allowed" sign at the top of Bahnhofstrasse would be a tad redundant, no?

Not only. TBH seeing animals performing tricks doesn't float my boat (that bit does include the clowns...).

I don't know why all this makes me think of the pros and cons of girls performing for the sheer pleasure of mankind also.

Where there is pleasure, there's money, there's abuse and there's always an "I want it and I'll get it" attitude that goes with it.
But yes, battles should be fought to be won for the good of everyone be it for an animal or a person.

And that was my philosophical minute of this Friday.

Re: Please help get knie to stop using animals

Last year my fiance was in egypt and sent me pictures of him on a camel. I was so jealous! Last month we went to circus alberti and here´s a pic of happy me. I love animals but also love the circus. Where else can i have the chance to do this? feed camels, llamas, kangaroos etc. Ohh and big cats, im in awe of them. How else can we humans experience any kind of bonding with these wonderful creatures without circuses and zoos? if you shut them all down then people who cant travel to africa or asia wont have a chance to know about these animals except in books and movies.

Camels are, of course, domesticated animals .

I have just seen this link. Anyone concerned with animal welfare could probably make more of a difference supporting an organisation like this.

I thought that it usually worked the other way round. Rarity pushes the price up

But, either way, they do a lot of good work.

Knie... barbaric

I would like to know....

When looking into having a dog I had to do a theory test to prove I was a decent enough person to have one.

Training is done the proper way, no short cuts with electric collars or anything that's inhumane for an animal.

So here I get to my point..., whatswith Knie circus ?!

Whipping horses in the face and standing with a sharp stick to violently jab the elephants when they don't stand on their hind legs quicke enough... All for children's/family entertainment.

Oh it's tradition.... Sod tradition..., and your twisted ways.... Slavery was tradition.... Hanging was tradition... We got rid of those and moved on didn't we...?!

The Tierschutz (animal welfare organization) investigates them, and other circuses which use performing animals, every year. You can read the results of their investigations here:

Have you -- personally -- ever actually seen any of those things happening at a Knie Circus show or training session? Or was it a friend of a mate who saw it all?

If you don't agree with or don't like circuses or zoos.

Just don't go to them. Stay at home and write complaint letters about the abuse you have seen.

The times i have been to the Knie Circus, both as a child and as an adult, I loved it. Apart from the clowns - creepy!! Along with thousands of other people. And I am sure that if there was even an inkling that they were abusing the animals (most of whom were born there) they would have been closed down pronto.

Knie is not a back of beyond little circus with two ponies, a clown and a over the hill trapeze artist. They are internationally renowned - especially for the horses.

Sorry, i didn't read all 12 pages dating from 5 years ago.

This year, i hope i shall get to see the elephants walking down from the station to Plainpalais in September. Also, take some friends and their kids to the zoo part to see the animals. Great day out.

I quite enjoyed going to the circus...then I read this book a couple of weeks ago. I think everyone involved in this debate should read it for good measure then continue the discussion afterwards:

Right... a work of fiction, anthropomorphising animals, inspired by a gorilla that was maltreated in a shopping mall. Yep - that's really relevant to Knie.
