Re: Please help get knie to stop using animals

One of my memories as a child was the arrival of Knie every year in our village. They used to come by train, then the elephants and other 'safe' animals walked to the Grande Place with all the artists, including clowns. Lions, etc, were wheeled there in their cages.

I just HATE animals being used in circuses- however Knie must be the best of all the circuses still using animals. Their training, living conditions, food, treatment, etc, is absolutely top-notch. If you have time, energy and money to spare, I'd suggest you concentrate on some of the absolutely dreadful circuses active in France, Italy, etc, and even worse, in Eastern Europe - where conditions can be abominable.

Give me the Cirque du Soleil anytime - no animals and the most amazing talent.

Re: Please help get knie to stop using animals

I think man has very strong relationship with animals and just can't live without them...be it eating veal or foi gras, enjoying bullfighting or wearing fur...these being some of the more dramatically cruel practices.

If I were an animal rightist, I wouldn't be bothering about circus animals until the more serious issues were completely resolved. Just a matter of priorities in light of scarce human attention and time.

What's so bad about eating veal? Should people who have traditionally worn fur and animal skins (such as Eskimos) also be banned from doing so?

Nothing's wrong with eating veal, we love it (my girlfriend is a big fan of tete-de-veau).

I also like eating foie-gras and whale, and wearing leather (my girlfirend has some furs she got at the 2nd hand shop).

Imagine the chaos if all the captive animals were set free. Would you happy waiting for Daisy to meander across Burkliplatz at 8am because she was free and fancied wondering up Bahnhofstrasse to see what had become of her non-Swiss cousins.

How would you like to queue behind her as she picked up some bovine dental care products in Migros - only for her to have a call of nature?

Are you suggesting that cows would have to wear nappies? That sounds a bit like animal cruelty to me.

That would be interesting.

Would break the everyday routine and "quiteness" that Switzerland suffers from from what I have heard.

I'd ride me an Elephant and break my way through the crowd!

Re: Please help get knie to stop using animals

As mentioned before Knie is one of the better circusses. Actually the Knie family goes to school with my children (half a year, when the circus is not out). they have a great respect for animals and treat them well.

Of course animals like better to be free, but what about our dogs? and cows? and horses? they are "domesticated?" And frankly I doubt if 1 of the circus animals would survive a day back in the African savanna...

To TO: please worry about bio-industry where animals never get outside or get any attention, locked in a room they cannot even turn in, only to get killed, about bears in Romania, about your nabour's dog who never gets outside, your nabour's cat who gets kicked and never petted... But worrying about Knie circus is on a lower priority! Is my opinion.

When did I say veal is bad or that people should be banned from wearing fur?

I simply said, between one practice: of snatching a new born calf from its mother and starving it to near-death so that you can get even more tender meat, and such practice affecting 100s of thousands, if not millions of calves, and the other practice: of a dozen odd reasonably well-cared for circus animals performing stupidly before an even more stupid audience, if I were an animal rightist I would clearly see which tree I must be barking up.

but then I am no animal rightist, I eat a moderate of meat myself, so just giving an opinion.

Cheers,
N

I, too, don't get a kick out of seeing Savannah animals in little tents in central Europe. I much prefer human acrobatics and get a huge sense of vicarious claustrophobia when I see a lion in a cage.

Hello all

I live in Zurich and see that KNIE (Swiss National Circus) has returned .

I am disgusted that in 2011 we still see animals being abused for our "entertainment":

http://asianelephantstoday.com/2011/...lephant-abuse/

I want to protest but I cannot seem to find any group that organises such things. I did find the following although old and I have sent the letter they suggested:

http://www.animalliberationfront.com...sProtest08.htm

I am asking that if you care at all about animal welfare that you try and send them the same message.

I do not want to appear as some crazed animal extremist but this really upsets me as it is so unnecessary.

Please no nasty/sarcastic messages about how animals are dumb, worthless etc etc.

Thanks
The Circus tradition started with horses, who happen to be animals. Circus was not to be "advanced gymnastics" or some clowns performing silly jokes. Modern circus however differs from the old-fashioned one as the animals are seen and "handled" as PARTNERS. Quite many of the animals in question take satisfaction, pleasure and clearly in many cases also some extent of humour when "performing".

To me, a circus without animals is no longer circus but just a sort of gymnastics arena.

I do not know what are the regulations for circus animals and have not been to see Knie so can not give an opinion. Nevertheless, I would be more worried about the state of animals in some zoos across Europe. I saw last year in a EU zoo a poor hipo that was in confined in such a small space that he could not turn around with ease, that was truly depressing.

I can tell you that the Circus Knie is absolutely abreast with all laws and rules and regulations. It already was so when one of the then "younger" Knie was a school mate of my mother in the 20ies/30ies in Schaffhausen. And Mom always was sure that the Knie are not liars

For someone who has never actually been to Switzerland, let alone a Circus Knie show you have a heavy and opinionated hand with the 'thanks' and 'groans'...

You mean "does break routine" ? Well, just look at this

The Zurich City Police is quite proficient in dealing with animals. It takes care of duck-mothers with their offspring when being "enroute" in the city, catches "deserted" snakes, etc.

I know one of the younger Knies and they do care a lot about their animals. If I was going to pick a circus to target for mistreating animals, Knie would definitely not be top of the list.
