Re: Please help get knie to stop using animals

One of my great-aunts was Margrit Knie-Lippuner, 1897 - 1974, the progenitrix of the entire active Knie Dynasty. When I was a kid (i.e. in the 'fifties) I saw how her two sons trained their animals (Fredy Knie Sr., 1920 - 2003, his horses and Rolf Knie Sr., 1921 - 1997, his elephants). They both were wold-wide admired pioneers in animal training techniques based exclusively on mutual love, respect and cooperation. They lived with and for their animals.

The animals absolutely loved them, did anything for them and very obviously were proud of what they did and enjoyed every bit of their activities. I met people who had traveled around half the globe to learn from the Knie Brothers when such trips were an absolute luxury and not a matter of course.

Sure, if someone had opened the horse boxes, the animals would have run away to have a blast, but I bet they would gladly have come back after a while in so called freedom.

I was told that the Knie Brothers had achieved what no one before had even dreamed of. Those skills were passed onto their offspring, some of which now run the show or already have handed off the baton to the next generation, #7 since the foundation of the enterprise about 200 years ago.

Hello all

I live in Zurich and see that KNIE (Swiss National Circus) has returned .

I am disgusted that in 2011 we still see animals being abused for our "entertainment":

http://asianelephantstoday.com/2011/...lephant-abuse/

I want to protest but I cannot seem to find any group that organises such things. I did find the following although old and I have sent the letter they suggested:

http://www.animalliberationfront.com...sProtest08.htm

I am asking that if you care at all about animal welfare that you try and send them the same message.

I do not want to appear as some crazed animal extremist but this really upsets me as it is so unnecessary.

Please no nasty/sarcastic messages about how animals are dumb, worthless etc etc.

Thanks
Totally agree, it should be criminal the treat animals like! It's 2011 this is definitely nothing that belongs to this century. Similar with bull-fighting in Spain, and no-ban on real fur.

Shame on Knie!!!

What's the difference between a well-loved and well-cared for animal performing in a circus and a well-loved and well-cared for pet performing tricks for the amusement of his master and his master's friends?

I've seen the Knie family training their horses, and the bond between the people and their animals is something which could never be achieved with whips and cruelty.

Is your objection to the Knie circus' use of animals based on general principles, or is there a specific practice with which you have a problem?
...just look into the eyes of these animals...no love for animals in circuses...none at all...zip..zero...

You cannot compare bullfighting with Knie. Bullfighting results in cruel pain and death. This does not happen with Knie. Please do no exaggerate.

The Circus tradition started with horses, who happen to be animals. Circus was not to be "advanced gymnastics" or some clowns performing silly jokes. Modern circus however differs from the old-fashioned one as the animals are seen and "handled" as PARTNERS. Quite many of the animals in question take satisfaction, pleasure and clearly in many cases also some extent of humour when "performing".

To me, a circus without animals is no longer circus but just a sort of gymnastics arena.
keep telling you that...

seriously, circuses has no room more, it's a thing of the past, like slavery...

a good example of what needed to get changed. The conditions in the old "Bäregrabe" simply were not adequate, and so things got changed

As a child, I cried and cried for days after my dad took us to see the old bear pit! New site is much much better - even though I still hate to see animals in any kind of zoo.

While Fredy was only two years younger than her [1918-2008] (apparently in the same class for a while --- possibly as being in a circus is not exactly speeding up your education) my mother had Rolf Knie far higher up in her regard, basically on emotional reasons as they were your uncles you may know better why

Many animals in the world only can survive thanks to the zoos. True, the ones who caused the almost extinction of so many animals are the humans ! Contradictory, but what can we do ? Yes, what we can do is to help the animals to survive. Zoos are one kind of a way to do it, circuses are another one, possibly more problematic but more entertaining and so effective in order to mobilize people in favour of animal live on this planet.

to be fair only 875 have been documented.
