Choosing Bars for Drinks - instead of "Complaining"

Hi Everyone

Having organised two drinks nights and having read about Diem's Friday night drinks, I see/hear a disturbing trend. "Complaining about the bar". Given that the complainers rarely do so in public, or certainly don't take the time to give me/us an alternative bar (except for Dan - who was nice enough to complain directly to me about the price of beer at the Blue Cherry and give an alternative), I would like to open a discussion to come up with a list of bars (locations and there positive points) for a group like us (ie 20-40 people who want to meet & talk).

So let's start a list, and help us organisers, instead of just telling us what we are doing wrong............after all we don't get paid to do this, we enjoy it

looking forward to hearing from you all

ashley

What do you think about the sugar lounge at löwenstrasse? It's quite big, I think during the week not so crowded, and the prices are like everywhere in Zurich. Or the Movie, near the Hauptbahnhof. It's also a nice place. Or Talacker near Paradeplatz, however, may be a little bit too small for so many people.

I think both you and Diem are doing the forum a great service by organising drinks; and I think that the current format works well (every 2 weeks there is gathering at a different bar mid-week for those who travel on weekends) and every week there is a gathering on Friday after work drinks at the same bar (so that when Diem is gone - it still works). Indeed the mid-week event could be every week too.

If you want a consensus for a choice of venue open it up to the forum - but decide with ample time; the suggestions (in previous posts) put forward all sound like good options - it is the meeting of people and not so much the venue that is important (although having said that it is always nice to go somewhere new).

Mark, an excellent point:
Quote:

My key points about meeting places are that they should:
- be central and easy to find (not everyone lives in the city)
- not be heaving/crowded places (because newbies will find it difficult or intimidating to find the group)
- not have loud music, so that we can hear ourselves speak

Especially these last two points rule out the English and Irish pubs. You can I also see why I prefer lounges like Münz.

Don't forget that the meeting places are starting points. Nobody is obliged to stay all night, so if you'd rather head off somewhere else later, no offence will be taken.

Having said all of this, the role of organiser is a privilege, not a job. Anyone can organise an event, anywhere they like.*

I reckon Sugar Lounge could be a good spot to try. It looks cool, and usually not too busy. I walk past it every day, although i've only been in there for a beer once.

The Movie Bar always reminds me of TGI Fridays in London. i think the bar gets busier and could fail the noise criteria.
