Our car insurance is from Axa Wintherthur. My gf was happy because she could have all correspondence in French (we're in Zurich Kanton).

Note: the car was 'imported' when we moved here (but the car only got through the Swiss MOT and got Swiss plates 'recently').
Very late reply but as my buddy fmf has just replied above:

Yes aa or rac for Brit reg cars or our Zurich relax cover looks after the person and or family, not the car so it doesn't matter where it's from.

Re: What a con... [Automobile Club de Suisse not attending breakdown due to British c

Perhaps the terms have changed since the first post. I have read the terms and conditions for the ACS covering a foreign car. They DO cover it, as long as it has been registered in CH and has Swiss tags.

Re: What a con... [Automobile Club de Suisse not attending breakdown due to British c

The insurance agent had all kinds of problems figuring out our premium since our model mini van is not sold in Switzerland.

Just pointing out the difference between a foreign car and a foreign registered car.

They are all foreign cars; Switzerland does not manufacture cars (except for a few very special ones).

One of the hardest lessons to learn here, but one most of us have had to go through at the beginning, is that popular Swiss saying, 'selber Schuld'.

Coming from my culture, when I first moved here my reaction would likely have been the same as yours. If I made a purchase based on what a sales person told me but I later found that he/she was being a tad economical with the truth, I too would have cried 'Con!'.
And the sales person would still laugh at you. Ever bought insurance or a car (or both!) in the US?

Sales persons are awful all over the world in my experience. And it is important to read contracts before you enter them all over the world. In this case, BTW, the OP does not even claim to have ask whether there would be coverage for a car registered in another country …

It is always important to ask around, especially if you are looking for any kind of insurance coverage. ACS for example is an unusual choice, most would go with TCS. At first sight, 'Patrouille TCS' cover all cars and not only cars with a Swiss license plate: http://www.tcs.ch/fr/assets/assistan...ouille-tcs.pdf. And it is just a breakdown services, not like ACS' insurance package in cooperation with Zurich Insurance (another player in the insurance market that I would not recommend).

Re: What a con... [Automobile Club de Suisse not attending breakdown due to British c

Could you be insured in the UK with the AA or RAC with a car on Swiss plates? We asked and were told we could not (despite both of us insured with them in the UK for near on 40 years). So had we continued to insure with them without telling them we had changed to Swiss plates- what would have happened if we had called them?

Re: What a con... [Automobile Club de Suisse not attending breakdown due to British c

do you mean breakdown or insurance and you would be in which country when calling for assistance ?

TBH I don't know why people still use TCS etc as they are damn expensive compared to breakdown cover from the insurance companies.

Re: What a con... [Automobile Club de Suisse not attending breakdown due to British c

I mean if we broke down in the UK, with our now Swiss registered car (previously UK registered) , had we not told the AA we had moved to CH.
Surely we would have had to tell them we had moved - and they would probably decline. If you take out break down cover in CH, or in UK or anywhere for that matter- the company will rightly assume you have a locally registered car (failure of disclosure, etc).

think they would turn up then say no way unless he she was sensible.

in my case anyway the breakdown covers nearly every country surrounding the med and is the same as my green card cover... another con for those in the UK.
