| | | Idiot Neighbours...
My Neighbours - apartment below ( American, not swiss), came in last night at 2.30am, and proceeded to continue the party until 5.30am...I spoke with them directly once but was pretty much laughed at as the music went down for about 10 mins then went back up again, my fiance resorted to ear-plugs, but as I hate using them I just tossed and turned till they shut up and then finally got an hours sleep before work....
Should I have called the noise police? I feel a bit of a killjoy but if they do it again tonight I think I will do a Michael Douglas in Falling Down!
I am going to speak to them as it isnt the first time, but get the feeling that these idiots will only take notice when they have been fined..
Any experiences like this?
Oh and if the neighbours are on the site and reading this, rap music at 3am on a Wednesday isnt clever, and neither is screaming till 5.30am when the neighbours below who are Swiss have children...

I understand you and that it is frustrating when you need to go to work the next day!! (sometimes even if not).
Just one thing though... this has nothing to do with being American or Swiss/not Swiss | | The following 5 users would like to thank Libellula for this useful post: | |

Crap as you feel today, it sounds like it was a one-off. Still doesn't excuse the totally inconsiderate behaviour but it might be worth not pursuing it this time. Of course, if they are partying on a regular basis take it further but I would say this time let it go. Have an early night tonight; it'll look better tomorrow.
We've got new neighbours who have some bloody machine running day and night (aircon?) which is fine in the day with the other ambient noise but sounds like someone's running a concrete mixer upstairs in the wee small hours when it's quiet.
Again, they're not Swiss...

Next time just call the police at 22:01. Apart from the police you can remain anonymous, and you have the right to a quiet night.
Give the police their name and telephone number, the police check it's the correct number, and phone them.

Given you are in Switzerland, you must learn to integrate, which means handling things as a Swiss person would.
Leave them an anonymous, nasty note and call the cops. If that doesn't work, bang on their door and shout obscenities. Do it in German too.

I'm pretty certain that when we phoned about down the street neighbors a few years ago the coppers asked us who and where we were.

I appreciate the american not swiss thing may not be 100% relevant, but I was guessing that Swiss would be more aware that loud music and shouting from 2.30 onwards is unacceptable, thats the only reason I mentioned it.
What is most frustrating is we are always considerate of the neighbours, and keep the noise to a minimum and seeing as they are below us that means we have been looking out for them...
I am really irritated as it is about the 3rd or 4th time now, and I hate feeling like Victor Meldrew but I am currently at work, totally knackered and the need for vengeance keeps popping up!
I am going to have a quiet word I think tonight, and be rational about it because if they do it again tonight there will be more fireworks in Nyon than on Swiss Day!

Oh dear, we have had the same experience here, we have non-Swiss people living below us and I thought they had misread the rules as they actually start partying at 10pm rather than stop.
They always have the windows open and the noise spills out on the balcony. They have done this several times and we have a young baby so every minute asleep is precious.
My husband has now resorted to banging on the floor with our broom handle (taking care not to damage the floor!). This time round it did the trick. I would love to phone the police but not sure if I have the guts (I am English after all!!).

That's totally unacceptable. Period.
Calling the police would be the best way to handle it - first time and every time. After a few times, I'm sure they'll get on record at the station. As for anonymity, of course the police should know who you are but I doubt they would release that information to those inconsiderate neighbors.
I once lived in a nice complex of single working professionals and we had a college girl (Daddy paid rent) who had all night get-togethers 3-4 times a week which included streaking, screaming, drinking, & pot smoking in the shared courtyard (think I got a contact-high sleeping once LOL). A new guy moved in and after a couple of weeks, all it took was for him to call the police 3 times & have it documented, write a letter and have it signed by neighbors, and send that letter to the landlord and CC it to the Health Department, Police, & Mayor's Office. She was evicted very easily. Wish I was the one who did that. This was in the US, btw, so Swiss may have even stronger laws.

I had awful neighbours in an old apartment. I called the police on three occasions to be met with the response "go and talk to them" despite me saying I had already been up several times to ask them to keep it down.
They never did pay them a visit despite the constant partying, shouting and what sounded like a herd of elephants running across the floor. |

It is funny here in BUlle the students always get blamed for everything, people think I am still a students also....cause they can. What I have noticed however is that it is the Swiss that are making most noise after 10.00 pm. wether it be cars, parties, returning from parties.....8/10 it isnt the students.
just 2 days ago they partied till 4.00am in the morning in the building across from me. they were playing pictionary and they were loud loud loud. Until the Portuguese lady yelled at them haha

@ rugby lad - why don't you organise a RWC party one early morning
Otherwise, the number you need is 117.

Don't go the passive-aggressive notes, Rugbylad. If this was a one time event, don't fret about it. But if it repeats itself, don't hesitate to call the police. Everyone has the right to sleep! But then again, I'm a party pooper, so i wouldn't take advice from me... |

We had a similar situation in our temporary accomodation in Lausanne but that was definitely students, but I could almost tolerate it as we were in a big block and new it wouldnt be long before we would be moving, but this is our home for a considerable period and I dont want things to build up and get to the point where we have a massive row because when tired my temper is as short as my speedos!lol
Our block is only 6 apartments, with at least 2 families with kids and we all have to live together but I am willing to ring the police if it continues and they dont listen when advised politely that the behaviour isnt acceptable...God I feel old now, I am 30 in 10 days but sound like my Grandad!

Well, I'm American and I would call the cops. That's not acceptable anywhere. I hope that they are students and not 40-somethings!
