| | | Housing blues
I have officially applied for more apartments than I did for jobs after graduation.
Starting. To. Get. A. Bit. Ridiculous. Just a bit.
Don't mind me, just venting!

Hang in there. You are in a tough spot because you are between the three normal days (end of March, June, September) permitted in contracts for moving. The positive, is that you are more likely to find those who need to move out in a hurry, err, sublet (ie: they couldn't give three months notice and will be more keen to rent). Good luck.

Jordan: Budget is approx. 1500 chf. Ideal would be living room, bedroom, and rest. However, a roof over the head not made out of a cardboard cutout would do. Would like to find something within 30-40 mins of my work. That's about all I have been "picky" about.
Kristianez: Thanks, I keep thinking "today's the day"
Grynch: Ha, well, have not been there since I left 7 years ago. But, true!

Just out of curiousity, how many is many? My husband called about 40, and viewed maybe 20 before we got our place in Neuchatel (took about two months before we got the "yes", plus three weeks to get the keys), though I suspect it is more challenging in Zurich...

I better zip it then. I have only contacted 26 places so far in past 40 days.

Ahhh, ok, no I know of a place that will soon become available in an awesome location in Wollishofen with nice balcony and roof top terrace, but......a little way above your budget.
Have you considered a share?

That price and with that much time leeway, you could almost live in some small town between here (Basel) and there. Of course, timing for the Post bus or whatever (if you need to make use of public transport) would be key here for ensuring a 30 - 40 min commute.
I realize it's a bit of a dumb question but:
Have you tried looking outside of town a bit?

To be frank, 1500CHF for a 2.5 zimmer (I am assuming from what you typed: living room, bed room etc) in Zurich city will be a challenge. Most average house hunters budgets within the city are within that range - up to 2000CHF so you will be up against stiff competition.
Increasing the budget is another option - not desirable but you will find that more options magically appear if you try to raise above to 2000CHF mark.
EDIT: look at this link for a flat in Adliswil - sounds decent. Adliswil is not even in the city and it costs 1530CHF. However, its full of lush greenary and is very well connected to get into the ZRH HB: http://www.englishforum.ch/adverts-p...02-2012-a.html

Hey, I am bit flexible on the rent and I meant exclusive of other charges. However, 2000 is definitely pushing the limits.
I am actively looking at sharing/sublet options now. I don't think the application form approach is going to work out with a L-permit. Anyways, going to hit the sack. Went looking after work for 2 hours tonight, and have a killer headache now, ha.
Wonder when I will manage to make friends here if I spend all my down time apartment hunting! Thank god for German tutorial apps to keep me busy on trams.

Hi and welcome.
Consider towns just on the border of Zurich city and you'll save 20-30% on ZH rates. Examples apart from the already mentioned Adliswil (recommendable) include Wallisellen, Regensdorf, Kloten all with good S-bahn links to town and Airport. Otherwise less desirable parts of Seebach, Oerlikon, Schwamendingen, Höngg, Affoltern if you really must stay in the City but have a comparable neighbourhood Gemeinde commute.
FYI Zürich city only has approx. 200+ vacant rentable apartments at any time.
The last time I could rent in Oerlikon for your budget was 1999.
Finally with the new Tram-West areas past Alstetten will become more commutable......
