Those really annoying "deaf" people

Am I the only one who gets cornered in the supermarket parking-lot (in some cases on a weekly basis) by a "deaf" person asking me to sign something and give them money? One of them actually knocked on my door wanting to sell me a "welcome" sign. What's up with that?!?! Kinda creeps me out!

And a big "hands-up" if you think this thread is going to go the way of the Romanian immigrants in Lausanne one?

Re: Those really annoying "deaf" people

My husband is Swiss and he told me most of them are not even deaf, just con-artists. It's just weird that since I've been here at the Bodensee, they literally jump at me before I can get out of my car at the mall. I never experienced this in Chur... maybe it is just a problem here *shrug* Drives me nuts though (BTW, what Romanian thread?)

Look - one thing you really can't complain about in Switzerland is getting bothered by the homeless. There are SO few of them around compared to other places around the world. If you are down to agitate yourself because of these few folks, you don't have enough problems in your life.

Re: Those really annoying "deaf" people

I have never been harassed by a homeless person in Switzerland (unless you consider kindly asking for some change harassment), but those aren't homeless people but members of well-organized gangs from you-know-where.

I once had a less than pleasant encounter with such a "deaf" girl while trying to quietly drink my coffee at gare Cornavin.

Sure, but the homeless people were never so "in your face" like these "deaf" people... did homeless people come knocking on your door trying to sell you junk in your hometown? As for "so few homeless people"... why do I get flyers in the mail every week asking to donate to such and such organization because 1 in 9 children living in Switzerland is below the poverty line? Okay, not homeless but poor. Wish they'd send us money instead of asking for it

Re: Those really annoying "deaf" people

Well, speak for your area, really, Thomas, since Geneva (Cornavin) and some Lausanne areas are full of people who will bug you to death. I mean deaf. I mean death..

I am kidding. But it is true, we have enough, it's always around the train stations, since cops are lenient in checking and it is hard to tell who is supposed to be there and who isn't.

I wouldn't rub anyone's misfortune in, seriously, but those pseudo deaf folks, shame on them. They are making it difficult for people to have sympathy for people with real ailments.

Just test them. Pretend signing and watch them run. They never know how to do real sign language. As deaf, they should.

Re: Those really annoying "deaf" people

Just ask them for their "Bewilligung". All persons asking money for a charity must have a government issued permit.

The so called deaf ones will quickly plead ignorance. Make the sign of a small rectangle with your fingers while slowly saying "BEWILLIGUNG".

They will disappear immediatly.

Of course they understand every word.

Re: Those really annoying "deaf" people

Very, very common in Paris:

Being handed petitions/donation forms is sometimes used as a distraction for a pickpocket - even the Paris chief of police lost his phone this way!
