Who seem to be getting more and more overweight as each year passes.

Why anyone thinks a 500 calorie drink is good on a daily basis is beyond me.
Is that SB's fault? Pretty much anything you buy is taken out of context of a balanced diet will make you put on weight, whether you buy the weightwacher's low fat options (which are not much better and in some instances worse than normal options) or stuff you face full of McD's every day...

There must be something about these drinks which makes them so appealing to people that they need to consume them in vast quantities.

Are Starbucks et al being irresponsible? Yes, IMO.

But, the more money they make is better for share holders and they would be stupid to try and limit consumption in any way.

You can level that at any group though - from 5* Michelin through to greasy-spoon cafs! Not quite sure why "fast food" places should bear the brunt of these.

Fancy restaurants (that I go to quite frequently for work) have food dripping in salt and fats - they taste good, in large portions. They may be self-limiting due to costs, but why are they any less irresponsible?

Fast food type places (I include Starbucks in that) make it very easy, and very cheap, to consume vast amounts of calories in a short time, outside of normal mealtimes.

I just don't like the way that everyone assumes that the people of Switzerland have to get obese like the rest of the western world.

Self-limiting in so much as when you are at work, you probably have to actually do some work and not spend the whole day in the canteen.

Starbucks and others - yes.

I like to hear your reasoning.

Incidentally, there was a time when people said:

"are you really suggesting that smoking causes cancer?"

I believe you're conflating two issues. We're not arguing "Does a huge caffe latte and a muffin every day make you fat?" but "Is a company selling huge caffe lattes and muffins responsible for making you fat?".

I am not making any (ill informed) judgements about Starbucks - its perfectly healthy within the right diet. You blame the product rather than the individual eating the product. Whatever happened to one's self control?

Are you generalising or are you saying most of the population of the Western world have not much self-control?

As a meal, no. But as a "snack" (whatever that newish word means), then yes.

With advertising, production creation and so on - yes (but only as that's the best way to boost their profits).
Should they do it? I'm not sure but you could argue the same about cigarettes, for example.
Should we have laws to control the sale and advertising of these?

snack dates back to 1807: http://www.etymonline.com/index.php?term=snack

haha, are you seriously comparing the intake of cigarettes to a pumpkin latte with whipped cream on top?

Do Starbucks advertise?

I might sound stupid, but I honestly can't remember seeing any advertising outside their stores.

Maybe they're just good at it...

Re: Subway CH expands

Old word, new meaning:

Old: "a bite or morsel to eat hastily."

New: "Massive amount of fat and sugar calories eaten hastily."

Can you seen the difference?

Their cups?

when you get drunk do you blame Mr Heineken for your hangover or do you say "maybe I should have drunk a little less last night"?

No, silly. I'm comparing the control of cigarette advertising and sale with the control of advertising and sale of junk, calorie filled processed food products.

And lots of governments are taking this seriously and looking into control, too.
