And as a shareholder of Starbucks what do you think of people who when given a 20 rappen upgrade on their coffee should tell Starbucks to throw it away and make a new one or give it to you at a reduced price?

It's the cost of doing business, the actual cost of the coffee is irrelevant.......better to make a customer happy than piss them off for 20 rap. That 20 rap extra has done more harm than good to the final bottom line.
I think the Swiss never understood the concept 'the customer is always right'.

Best coffee I ever had was in a Lebanese restaurant. Followed by a Turkish one in Marseille. Best coffee I think is a blend served in Portugal.

It's a very important message to investors, only invest in a company where the customers are not price sensitive, the last thing you want to invest is any commodity business where items sell on price.
So don't invest in companies that sell to expats

We're talking about a foreign company here (and I think I've never actually seen a Swiss person employed as a Starbucks barrista either), So with both staff and management being foreign, I don't see much room to extrapolate Swissness from anything you see there ...

I was thinking along those lines - I as an employee in that situation would trust my judgement to just ignore the extra 20rp, but I think the culture of some employers is to intimidate their employees to the extent they only follow the book. I can just hear the weekly staff meeting when the store manager brings up "the 20rp issue" and being a "good" manager from a meeting targets POV, but insensitive towards customer relations drives home the importance of charging the premium.

Slightly off but related - a while back in the UK, I purchased a few things from a M&S food branch. I didn't want a 5p bag, just one of those little free ones, but they were out of those. She couldn't just let me "have" a 5p bag, but I could pay for one. It was only 5p, but my point was that they could provide a substitute in the absence of free bagsI'm not sure she "got it" but is obviously well-trained

Re: Starbucks Coffee

I've never been to Starbucks ever. I prefer my coffee in a local bistro, reading the papers and watching the local wee old men have their first glass of wine at nine.

These days my coffee (with a glass of water) costs around 3.50.

None of that semi latte crap.

I when at Starbucks never order such "semi-latte --- etc stuff" but REAL coffee

And in German speaking Switzerland, those "wee old men" have to wait until 10.00 to get their first glass of wine

Maybe that is why Starbucks wants to corner in on the alcohol market - double espresso with an extra shot

Until just a few years ago, you could NOT get any alcohol in cafés here. Things only became liberal after the turn of the century. Many cafés now have quite nice wines on their menu

Starbucks has their eye on that market, as soon as someone invents the machine to dispense the wines

Re: Starbucks Coffee

What I love is that you can watch how Starbucks coffee is made. I ordered a caramel machiatto today and about 80% of it was milk.

Drinks with ice cubes at Starbucks don't contain a lot of what you paid for. If you'd take out the ice, there'd be barely any liquid.

I felt like pointing that out. :P

Simply look at the restaurant Bauschänzli where you can take some good wines off from the dispenser --- I have used that dispenser for many many years

Re: Starbucks Coffee

To me, an espresso is something to drink when you need to run for a train. It lasts seconds.

If I'm paying for a coffee, I want something where I can sit and relax for 15 minutes or so and read the newspaper.

In an ideal world, I'd have six espresso shots in a decent mug with some cream and sweetener. But that just isn't available, unless I'm at home, or on the free machine at work

So I settle for milky stuff. It's about the solitude, and the time to myself, more than anything else. Starbucks offers that in spades. With a comfy chair. I'll happily spend an hour or so in there, with a few drinks. I'm not sure I could afford, or would want 18 espressos in a bistro with a hard chair and a tiny wobbly table.
