A Lunch Place Not Open AT LUNCH!!!!!!

This post has been two days in the works because I was deciding whether or not to write it. Will people just tell me that I need to stop complaining and go npback to where I came from? This is Switzerland they will say. But after thinking for a while I decided....l have to post this.

At work I almost always bring my lunch because eating out every lunch would be an expensive endeavor that could be used for better things. Anyway, I forgot my lunch Friday and have always seen co-workers with delicious sandwiches from a local sandwich/bakery down the street. So noon hits, the kids go to recess and I stroll down to the sandwich shop. As I approach, I see the door closed and lights off. "oh no" I think, "did something bad happen?" As I get closer, I see the sign. Closed daily from 12:00 to 14:00. HOW THE F DOES A LUNCH PLACE CLOSE AT LUNCH!!!?? This is the dumbest thing I have EVER heard of. Is this not completely insane to anyone else? When I got back with no lunch, I asked them how they got theirs and they responded by saying that you have to go in the morning, before they close for lunch!!! Sometimes I think that business here don't actually want BUSINESS...lunch places closing at lunch, grocery stores closed by 5. Holy #*%#.....rant over.

I now truly believe my Swiss co-worker who always tells me that the Swiss revel in the art of inconvenience. This is true proof of that.

So the bakery can make enough money by opening when he wants, he is still open from what i understand.

Sure it sounds crazy, but if you can afford to do it, why no ; good luck to the guy, sounds like he's got it right and you my friend do not !

Opening hours in places can be weird. But, in the 60ies and 70ies, all business was closed between 12.00 and 14.00 and in many places between 12.00 and 15.00 so that this is hardly suprising

Very true....but this is 2012. It just seems so strange that a country that is so economically successful in so many ways can make some really strange business decisions. A great example is buying a car. In the US, the busiest car buying days are Saturday and Sunday, and most dealers are open until 9 or 10 pm on Saturday. Here, they are closed on Sunday and many only take appointments only on Saturdays or are open until noon at best. I will never understand it. Why is there no competitive drive?

Re: A Lunch Place Not Open AT LUNCH!!!!!!

The Law does not allow places to be opened on Sunday unless it is wo/manned by the owners. Our local supermarket is always open on Sunday mornings 8-12- by the owners themselves - to protect employees and their family life.

There are exceptions for railway stations, which is why many mini-markets are opening at stations all over the place.

But yes, a lunch place closed at lunch-time is daft. But what do you mean by 'lunchtime' place? Is it a restaurant type place or a small local supermarket? Bakeries are not 'lunch' places really. Plenty of cafés and restaurants opened I'm sure.

2012 ? you are sure ??

competitive drive ? you mean companies advertising that they are open on Saturday 14th April from 10.30 until 17.45 ? or on Sunday 27th May from 11.00 until 17.35 ?

We here get phone calls from potential customers who are astonished to hear that we are open on Saturday 09.15 - 18.00 as many small shops still close on Saturday at 16.00 or 17.00

Because, as long as there is banking secrecy, there is no real need for a market driven economy.

As a veteran expat, and though this will make the euros grumble, it is my observation that while the US thrives on making it easier for the customer, Europe still cherishes the old ways where convenience was never part of the equation. If it isn't inconvenient, it isn't the way it has always been done and, thus, it is shunned.

In Finland, where 7+ weeks of holiday are commonplace, the entire capital (Helsinki) empties out in July when everyone is at their summer cottage. I used to fume every time I'd need something for my camera and I'd pop by the shop only to find the 'Gone fishing, come back in 8 weeks' sign on the door (and he had really, really inconvenient hours even when he wasn't fishing). Sure, it's great that folks can do that and still make a living but, for the customer, particularly one who didn't get 8 weeks of holiday (especially one who was often on call for those with more holiday), it rankled. Americans love the idea of Europe until we realize it doesn't apply to us, even when we live here.

Still, I think you should send your experience to Jon Cleese (or the SNL crowd) as it is a classic in the making. I keep thinking of the pet shop skit...

Re: A Lunch Place Not Open AT LUNCH!!!!!!

Hey if self-employed or small businesses can manage to keep one foot out of the rat race, why shouldn't they? They want their lunch just as you do.
I'm always asked to work on Saturdays and as I'm my own boss I bluntly refuse. I had to do it for years when in the employment of others, ruined my social and family life... so now I'm making up for it.

There is no connection between banks (banking secrecy included) and the market driven economy. The market here does NOT demand open car selling places on Saturdays. BUT if YOU start a car selling place which will be open on Saturdays from 09.30 until 18.00 for the next five years, you may get some business and may force your competitioners to follow.

Re: A Lunch Place Not Open AT LUNCH!!!!!!

In southern Switzerland shops are open till 18:30. Smaller shops are closed at noon. Any attempt to extend opening hours is voted against by ~70% of the people. It looks like I'm the only one who works till 19-20.

This is because you are coming a point of convenience and less organization. I don't mean you are not organized, but you are talking about America. A place where the service industry is set around the customer and not a central plan of organization. This is why you have people eating fast food at any time of the day, and doing grocery shopping in their pajamas at 3am, when you know they have plenty of time the rest of the week. And we know the state of the eating situation in the US, so I won't even go into that.
The point is that grocery store and who ever else wants to make your money, but doesn't need to pay someone tons of idle time waiting around for you to choose a car 10 at night on Saturday. If you are going to spend over 20,000 CHF I doubt most of those car buys will be spontaneous.
And about car dealerships in the US. I am from Detroit and the practice of being open on the weekend is only a very recent occurrence. It was considered a no-no until the recent need to pump sales, before the crash, basically because of over supply and too many dealerships were in existence to be more competitive. TRUST me, Detroit dealership employees do not love the idea of making the same amount of money as they were before, and now having thin themselves much further out to get it.

And another thing, why is it a sandwich shop, which is clearly not a lunch shop, or they would be open at that time, not be afforded the same kind of break times as you? Your colleges have figured out when to buy the sandwiches and aren't complaining about it. I mean, maybe they are. But what is the difference of a sandwich bought in the morning and put into the company fridge, then a sandwich made in the morning, waiting in the store fridge, waiting for you to come and get it at noon? Except they sell the sandwiches, and get to enjoy lunch as well, while cutting labor by a couple of hours.

Sounds like excellent business sense to me.

It's cause they don't need the option. They get their things done in advance, not at the last minute. Well, more or less, Migros is open on Sundays off the highway...but then again that's where are the foreigners are passing thru.
