Re: Transport system annoyed me big time!

OP. I really can't understand why your local friends didn't help you with change or informing you about the giant green button on the machine that gives you a daycard, or tageskarte.
I think I would be annoyed at local friends not helping you out rather than being caught without a ticket.

You truly are ignorant if you thought that was a flamethrower... seriously.

And re taking the photo, if you post something without clearly stating the source is not yours - given the content of this thread and your claims to have photos - it is absolutely expected that this was meant to be related.

Seriously "a lot of desperation to discredit me although I never said the photo was mine...". No you've done that pretty much all on your own.

Your "facts" have been shown to hold no credibility.
Maybe it's a British thing, but I had no problems in understanding that that wasn't his photo, and that he didn't really think it was a flamethrower, but at the time felt threatened by it. Us Brits sometimes indulge in a little exaggeration when trying to get a point across.

Ironically, I think the next time Mr Nkomp18 comes to Zurich he'll rather seek the company of the Swiss over english speaking expats

I quite agree - the attitude of some expats here seems analogous to that of Cameroonian taxi drivers in New York City who believe they have arrived in the land of the free and the home of the brave whilst the indigenous population feel somewhat differently. The Swiss I know are more open to different points of view.

For the record, I'm British. So no, I don't think it is a "British" thing. My experience of "things British" is usually one of understatement to get a point a across.

Exaggeration is something that our American cousins specialise in.

That would be the stereotype and not the reality

Re: Transport system annoyed me big time!

Yeah there's a lot of questioning here like "Why didn't your mates help you" and these are designed to put me in a situation where I have to write every tiny detail of what happened and why it had to happen that way so that you grab on to more details and scrutinize me further. The sad thing is that they really did try to help, those poor things walked with me for an hour in search for the elusive day-ticket and they are born and bred in Zurich.

First of all they drove me to the university and took me to 3 different tram stations where they were certain I could get a day ticket. In fact we tried "Langensteinenstrasse" and "Langmauerstrasse" and "Letzistrasse" tram stations. The machines were old on all of them. You know, the coin-only accepting white boards with matrix maps.

My mates were quite exasperated by newly build stations having old machines and made a whole rant about it but I didn't think anything bad about it and after walking for more than an hour, we ended up at a bakery for brunch after which we bid farewell and I decided to walk by myself to the centre which was only 10 minutes away.

Since I walked to the centre, I didn't choose to get a 24 hour ticket from the central station because I would spend the entire day in central Zurich sightseeing, going to museums etc and therefore needed no transport in the old town. Altstetten in the evening wasn't planned, but happened unexpectedly and I was so bored of the centre that I didn't mind going a bit further out to spend some time at another friend's house with his family.

Someone said "come up with a better story". Well, I don't want to fabricate a story to make you believe me. Instead I highly recommend that you fabricate a better reaction. This is the only story and I'll stick to it, no matter how embarrassing it might be for your city.

And yeah, the things I like to called "flamethrowers" seem to be touching some sort of sensitive chord in some of you but I have never seen them before and they ARE pretty big, the tip is a canister for god's sake, I don't know how you can have a policeman pointing that canister at you and be all zen about it, let alone think it's "normal". I thought the reaction would have been "What? no way that never happens here! How unlucky you are" and instead I get a lot of "How can you not expect that, happens every day, grow up!".

My friends have been ace, but judging from the majority of comments here I think you're showing the inhospitable side of Swiss culture. What I read is "If shit happens to you it can only because you deserved it. We won't even accept that you might have been caught in an unfortunate circumstance. We are perfect and you deserved everything you got so you can suck it, you and all your lies".

Apologies to all of you who were sympathetic and offered kind suggestions, they were very much appreciated and I don't regret writing my story in the forum because I got to read your views.

So, actually with "The University" you mean the one at Irchel Park, instead of the ETH/Uni combo downtown or the one at Hongerberg

Nevertheless, Irchel has this awesome big tram/bus stop at Irchel Park where thousands of people pass by on a daily basis. Guess what they have there.

Indeed, when you visit the locations where few people get on you will find old automats those indeed tend to accept only coins, because when you made it that far into a city you likely have coins and know the system already.

As you though apparently arrived at the airport and got coins there already (for not being able to find automats at the airport.... where there are tens of them...) it is a bit odd that you did not go to find a larger station to get your ticketing needs.

I am also a bit surprised that even though you realized that you could not get any tickets without coins in a few places and while you apparently with to a variety of locations downtown that you did not bother to get a ticket at alternative locations or at least get more coins.

Nevertheless, clearly you where aware of the situation of ticketing machines not always taking coins. You also knew that you had to buy a ticket. Thus getting on on a train, especially on a station where there are more than ample ways to get them, just puts at fault. Don't blame the fact that you did not want to get one, you had more than enough chances.

How many mates were there? Are you telling us that between you, a group including several locals couldn't scrape together enough small coins to buy a ticket?

Hi nkomp18,

No use crying over spilt milk etc. etc. but just in case you come back to Zürich, and also in case your friends or their future visitors might benefit from the knowledge: These machines (the old, coin-eating ones) do give out day tickets, if you know the top-secret codeword right buttons to press.

About 10cm below the numeric keypad, you'll see a row of three large buttons on the front of the machine. From the left, these are:
a yellow button labeled "Kurzstrecke". This gives you a short-journey ticket (valid for the next 30 minutes, up to something like 5 stops from where you are in any direction but no changes. A list of all the stops this includes is printed underneath, so you can simply check if your destination is on that list.)
a blue button labeled "Zone 10". This gives you a single-use ticket for Zone 10 which is the whole of Zürich city (valid for the next 60 minutes, unlimited changes.)
a green button labeled "Tageskarte Zone 10". This gives you unlimited travel anywhere in Zone 10 for the next 24 hours.

It wasn't very obvious to me the first time either - I expected there to be a four-digit code somewhere for a Tageskarte, like there is for the individual destinations - so your friends shouldn't feel bad. But now they know, eh? And now you do too.

Dude.

Arrived Friday night and left Sunday morning.

This is a testament that I wasn't there to get a free train ride, but to see Zurich and I only had all of Saturday to do so.
