Ignored no-free-newspaper sticker

Hi guys,

I've been getting free newspapers delivered every single week, and I must say that my recycling pile would be about ten times smaller without them. Horribly annoying, as I don't have a fireplace to burn them in (they'd come in really handy in winter if I did)

So, I went to the store a couple days back and bought a sticker which declares that I don't want free newspapers delivered to my box. Thought that would solve things.

BUT

When I got home today, what was I to find but a fat.new.newspaper.

I'm all for nipping things in the bud as opposed to waiting for the distributor to trot past my mailbox next week and tell him/her off then, that probably wouldn't even help...

So, the newspaper publisher immediately got a nice email telling them that I would bring all (and I mean ALL) newspapers delivered to my address over to their place if they didn't stop sending it immediately.

I think this should make them stop. What's your bet?

Edit: No newspaper burning planned thanks to marton's comment

I think you will find that burning newspapers in a fireplace is illegal here.....

Oh, thanks for the info
But as I don't have a fireplace, it wouldn't even be possible... not that I'd do it after your info.

Re: Ignored no-free-newspaper sticker

I don't think they will care at all.

Where I live the "free newspaper" does not fall into the category of junk mail / junk advertising - if you put a "no junk" sticker on your mailbox the free paper will still be delivered because it's not considered junk it's considered more like a Gemeinde information pack. Seriously.

To be honest if I were you I'd open the free paper and have a browse through it - usually they are full of interesting local stuff - much more so than the rubbish paper we used to get back home. Ours lists things like road closures, events going on, when they are testing the civil defense alarms, rules about what time of day you can cut the grass. All kinds of useful stuff. Plus it's a good exercise in German.

And then you have something to cover the table with when the kids do painting and something to put your dirty wellies on and something to make telescopic trees and paper hats with, and papiermache Octopods..... [well that's what we do with ours, doesn't everyone ]

Oh, you're lucky then, I don't get any envelopes that size in the mail

Yeah, but 10 newspapers, folded, equals 20x thickness of 1 newspaper, equals overstuffed envelope

Exactly - we have a sticker that says "keine Reklame, keine Zeitungen" and I've (well, hubby, my German is not up to such complex distinctions) has been told by the Gemeinde that it doesn't apply to the local paper..... go figure.

Re: Ignored no-free-newspaper sticker

Do they have your addressee printed on? Because if they have the post is legally required to deliver them to you, and thus has no choice, but to ignore your sticker.

In case the free news papers are issued by Migros or Coop you can "revoke" the "subscription" (you are considered to have a subscription if you have a Cumulus-/Supercard, I think) on this pages:

No, there's no address printed on, this newspaper is tossed into everyone's mailbox.

Whoa. In that case, I guess calling the Gemeinde is in order if the paper continues to be delivered...

try cutting the masthead of the newspaper, putting a big red cross on it, and stick that on the letterbox. should be pretty clear. svp are buffers for ignoring the no junk mail.

I've found that nothing stops the tide of junk mail and junk newspapers here. I've got no idea why, but that stuff gets delivered no matter what.

If you're talking about the coop and migros paper. They're associated with your loyalty cards and don't necessarily fall into the same category as free papers. You would have to cancel their subscription right at the source.

Yep ... these have addresses printed, so can't not be delivered.

All mail, including newspapers, comes from your local Post - so this should be where you (or your husband) should go to try to stop them ..... or they will inform you that due to healthy investment by the publishing company, that they're obliged to deliver them to every household without exception.

About 4x p.a. you should have paper collections (often by the Jubla), from your street door - look out for a paper in the post a week before.

If not, you can always start origami and set up a paper hat company.
