Busking/begging on trams

Hey All,

I've taken a look on other threads but there wasnt really much on this that i could find.

Is busking/begging on trams legal over here?

Nearly every morning on my way to work there is someone with an accordian or a violin on the tram playing their songs and then making you feel really awkward when they walk past you shoving their stupid paper cup in your face trying to get you to give them your money that you worked hard to get yourself (or at least i do :P).

Its starting to get extremely irritating now esecially when its on the 7am tram into work when you've only just woken up and can barely open your eyes or think let along having to sit there with an accordian blaring out in your face and the bloke staring at you (i was stupidly sat on the very front seat this morning)

I understand that they need money to eat and I can apprecciate that but MUST they do it when im on my way into work? Im always grouchy enough in the morning as it is, let alone with some man shoving a cup in my face making me feel bad for not giving him my money just because he can play a crappy song on an acordian singing extremely badly.

I suppose its my own fault for forgetting my headphones this morning and sitting on the front seat but does anyone else getting annoyed by this or is it just me being extremely grumpy in the mornings?

Re: Busking/begging on trams

...is it worse than walking up Freiestrasse and hearing the Peruvian family sing out of tune?

You're always free to get off and catch the next tram in 7 minutes.

No No, you don't pay for the music you pay for them to go off the tram.

No.
But that doesn't put-off most of the people who do it.

At least they're doing something. And sometimes they play well. I much prefer that to the beggars who whine at you, telling you of their 7 kids who don't have anything to eat, their sick granies etc.

I actually like it. Not that I pay them anything, but hey, if they are willing to provide free entertainment, why not...

You kidding? Hits like "the song of the Farmers daugher getting water in the Puzta" or "the green, green Steppes of home" played extremly badly by some bugger with more teeth than IQ points

Re: Busking/begging on trams

its just bloody annoying! I think it wouldnt be as bad if it were in the afternoon or even late morning. But on the tram to work when you've just woken up is just extremely irritating.

I've contemplated putting english 1p & 2p coins in their stupid pot but thought that might be a bit mean. I suppose fair play to them for having the guts to do it but any old muppet and stand there and sing like a cat being strangeled whilst pushing two things together pushing buttons!

Maybe next time i should stand next to them with my saxophone and blare it out to them, or follow them around for the day that would be quite funny!

Re: Busking/begging on trams

I just ignore them. If they're insistant, I shake my head. I never needed to do more than that.

The worst are the ones who sing acapella. I can never tell if they're drunk, just happy, slighty loony or busking.

Fear not - the Powers That Be (in Basel) have declared that buskers must now sing softly...

Re: Busking/begging on trams

Related but unrelated...
Sometimes street/tram musicians are extremely talented. One evening I managed to leave the office early (as in 7pm) and it was still light outside, so I went down by the lake in Bellevue to read my book.
This guy was playing the violin so wonderfully that I had to stop reading and listened to him until he stopped playing. Glorious.
Then I thanked him, tipped him, and walked off so happy!

(sorry, picture a bit dark as it was taken with my phone)

Which reminds me of the time Joshua Bell did a bit of busking at the Washington Metro:

How I wish I had been commuting that day...

I usually don't care about the few minutes I am exposed to street music or beggars. The only thing I'm allergic to is "El Condor Pasa".

Re: Busking/begging on trams

There is a guy who plays his harp outside our local Migros. He only plays from April to about November (I don't know where he goes for the winter months!) But he declares and pays his taxes on anything people give him. I'm glad he's back, no more beggars hanging out at the Migros now.
