You mean to say that trains do not fall off the end of the world in Dietikon?

Cheers,

We've lived in the Zurich area for 5 months, and I have to say I like it. I have a GA, I ride the train, I don't find it especially crowded, compared to say NYC or Washington. Transportation is so reliable here by comparison to the US or Holland. The city is small, really, and has overpriced bits for sure, but it also has funky bits that aren't heinous. After living in suburban sprawl hell in the US, I rather like being in a more dense place. But then, I've always been a city girl.

We do live outside the city - in Winterthur - and my husband works in Oerlikon, so I think we have a nice balance.

I was waiting for some cannut-ism here

Anyways. Most places are just what they are, blah. We assign value according to whatever we are momentarily dealing with. The esthetics and pretty train views will only pull us so far. I don't think it is the OP's location at all that seems to be the problem. Just like when we are determined to be slaphappy somewhere, we will be no matter how desolate the place is. So, to objectively say, it is always perfect here, or it always sucks, is impossible, not sure why people are arguing. Right now, in the spring, warm breeze and funky people yodeling outside, despite the turmoils to overcome, it is still pretty darn good. For me that is. Hope it gets better for everyone.

Let's get one thing straight: "I dislike Zurich" does not mean "I dislike Switzerland", and "I dislike the Bahnhofstrasse" does not necessarily mean "Zurich is awful". In fact, I know a lot of people who love Switzerland but can't stand walking around in the Bahnhofstrasse - my OH being one of those. Actually, I dislike and avoid as much as possible Bahnhofstrasse too, mainly because of the overcrowding, but there are so many places I love in Zurich where I am delighted to go to, that really, I am quite happy to be here. Most days, at least.
Bahnhofstrasse, with some noteable exceptions like H&M, C&A, St.Annahof, and maybe Manor, is snobbist. But of course, much of all business at Bahnhofstrasse is selling expensive stuff to rich foreigners (plus rich expats and prestige-hungry banking folks), but not to serve the normal natives.

No. No bots. I have a radar for them

But some people are so protective of their own positive attitude towards the place they live in, they won't allow others to feel ambivalent about this place. It's ok.

Re: Fed up with Zurich

I understand the stated intent of the OP.
I lived some years in Zürich town & then moved out to a village with less than 5K people. I find I visit Zürich town less & less; certainly less than once a month.

I have not driven into Zürich for several years; the train is cheaper than the cost of parking alone, plus I do not have to drive around for ever looking for parking.
I usually stay late & after several late night unfortunate experiences with drunk and/or aggressive people at the Bahnhof or in the train I take a taxi home (which ruins the economy of train travel).

With rare exceptions I find service in Zurich is not especially helpful or polite. One exception is I was in Churrasco some weeks ago for the first time for a year & the waiter not only remembered me but remembered which wine I ordered last time.

After hundreds of trips into Zurich, it finally dawned on me: I am fed up with the place (I moved out into the countryside long ago). After finally finding a ridiculously expensive parking spot, paying exorbitant prices for mediocre food and lousy service, browsing overpriced shops (why would anybody actually buy something on Bahnhofstr.?) walking through the same sterile streets over and over again, then coming back home a couple hundred francs poorer with little to show for it, I ask myself: why did I even bother? I feel like that about pretty much any city.

Its not bad service if you are Swiss. Its only us expats that complain about that. Why, because that's the way it is here, it's like the Swiss staring or pushing to the front of the queue, it's not rude it's just how the Swiss are, it's the way things work here.

It's Switzerland, things are not the same here as our homeland wherever that may be.
To live the life we have here, some small annoyances need to be accepted.
Actually if you speak to enough of them you'll find out that they too think there is a huge lack of service here.

Just my experience...
