Re: accused of shoplifting, but not really?

Awful, I kind of know the feeling, I once out of curiosity entered one of the Bahnhofstrasse jewelry shops in Zurich looking for a good Tissot watch and due to what I believe might have been my casual outfit, two clerk pointy nose ladies immediately came stressed to me saying that they were closed while they obviously weren't closed. They scort me out of the shop like if I was a delinquent trying to steal. Unbelievable. They expect you to buy watches wearing a stupid suit?

Another experience, I was looking to buy a new tailored car and my top two choices were back then in 2008 the Mercedes C-250 and the Audi TT 2008. I made an appointment in the Mercedes Bellevue and went straight from work (I was working at IMC back then) to the Mercedes garage and the guy from Mercedes looks at me from top to bottom and asks "where did you said you worked?" I turned around and left and was really close to give him the finger.

I ended buying an Audi TT 2008 with 20k on extras on top of the base price and Mercedes lost the deal ... thanks to them being a bunch of dumb ass suit-wearing morons.

I assume she means non-white...ya know, a healthy abundance of melanin.
My wife is pale white in winter, and very dark in summer.

And she's 1/8th Swiss (at least, or at best, not quite sure, but that's what counts!), the dark summer skin comes most likely from her Greek or Spanish blood.

Re: accused of shoplifting, but not really?

We bought my wedding band ( 2 rows of diamonds) in a shop on the BHstrasse in Zurich and they 'service' it every year for free (!!!) I also have a nice solitaire engagement ring and another couple of sparkly pieces. I LOVE going to get it serviced as I am usually combining it with a shopping/touristy trip and in my comfy walking flip flops and jeans / shorts.
Watching their faces as I go into the shop and have a look around and ask questions is priceless. Then I say I would like to get my wedding band serviced and the attitude changes so dramatically.
I have actually complained to the woman serving me a couple of years back that their snotty attitude deterred me from spending any more money with them again - but they don't appear to care.

I think you were far to nice to them. I'd probably stand outside their shop for a day telling everyone who would listen how they treated me... or go in and keep asking the woman following me to find me things.... that was what I always did to hovering sales assistants to get rid of them

i'm really way too polite, i know. i was raised in the south, i still habitually call everyone i know ma'am or sir if we're conversing in english...and i don't feel comfortable with "naming and shaming." but i won't be going there anymore, and i told the parents of my little duck, so her birthday presents won't be from there either.

on the other hand, i am so surprised how many people have horror stories similar to this. and the dad of the little girl asked me if the clerk was german? are germans more likely to be ugly salesclerks than swiss?

and yeah, i do have a medium level of melanin (i.e. a perpetual tan). aaand i do get treated disdainfully at times by various people in various service sectors. i figure, it's okay, after i get a "big girl" job, i will just avoid spending my francs at their establishments and raise my offspring with the idea of "tolerance" firmly planted in their minds.

and i also try really hard to change peoples' perceptions of "foreigners" (i.e. i do give my seat up to an old lady that would have to stand otherwise, always help with baby carriages, and google which platform the connecting train is ) i hope it's the little things that count.

Re: accused of shoplifting, but not really?

UPDATE*

due to feeling all self righteous, i made my bf take a trip with me back to the shop to tell them that i didn't appreciate being made to feel like a thief. turns out, the lady who accused me is only a "temp" and that she...is...not swiss. and also, they apparently have had some problems with loiterers in the past weeks, who did try to steal. she explained they are only a little shop, and when someone steals, it hurts more than if someone was stealing from a big store. and she apologized!

but now i wonder, do all employees who behave poorly get classified as "temporary?"

thanks for all the posts, it made me realize that this crud happens to people all the time.

and on a side note, i "love" how shocked people are when they hear that i'm an american and not turkish, indian, or spanish, or some other "poor" minority. it makes them behave a lot better. i love switzerland, but sometimes i hate that ugly SVP mentality...
what a disgusting comment you have drop here, despising 4 nationalities is not going to change how you were treated in that shop. This comment make you look worse than the lady at the shop, think about it.

SVP are clearly not the only ones with an "ugly mentality" - shame on you.

.
Thanks for the update.

And the answer is a resounding: "no".

Temporaries are just not as informed or used to the environment they are working in as permanent employees, thus they are prone to more mistakes und poor judgement calls.

Re: accused of shoplifting, but not really?

In Britain there are many small shops within large stores. I know, the same occurs here, and the small shop sells it's own stock using it's own sales point.

The point is, a customer was accused of stealing when they took an item and moved to another part of the sales floor. They were found guilty of shop lifting as technically they left the small shop and entered the large shop.

I am always careful to ask anybody nearby, where can I pay please?
