Clean Swiss, dirty foreigners..I am so cross

Our landlady is selling and we are moving to another rented apartment. A local agency is handling the sale.

The agent tells me how Swiss people like to see very clean apartments and last time we had a viewing the bin was smelly and we haven't cleaned the rim of the patio door. "Swiss people are very clean and expect things to be very clean when they view a property"

I ageed that the bin was an oversight. I then commented how I am sure that the Swiss are very clean, howoever maybe it is different outside the home, as I had spent a day with the Gemeinde cleaning the banks of the river and the footpaths and that within a week there was new rubbish lying about.

Her response was "I am sorry to say but that is the foreigners not the Swiss"

My response was "so that will be people like me then". I am so so mad I want to tip a pile of rubbish in her garden.

If you had just agreed that the bin was an oversight without provoking the landlady about your river and footpaths comment, you wouldn't be mad right now.

If you do that, it would just confirm what she already thinks about foreigners...

Not that I don't agree it would be satisfying

Re: Clean Swiss, dirty foreigners..I am so cross

When we moved out of our last place, the landlord complained the roasting tin wasn't like new. I very nearly took 20CHF out of my wallet and shoved it up his nose. I guess he wasn't used to a kitchen actually being used for real cooking.

However, I refrained, and got my revenge later when I got his "moving out" costs halved by the insurance company, and made him wait nine months before he got the money.

If one person's narrow minded opinion freaks you out and you want to make a thread about it, you must have been cruising through life in "easy mode" so far.

Dear me got love the narrow minded, it gives us something to chuckle about. It's a shame we can't be more fussy about the accommodation here then you could reverse the roles

Re: Clean Swiss, dirty foreigners..I am so cross

Oh dear,

I must be metamorphing into a local, I actually see and agree with some truths in the first post, that many of the non-locals are responsible for the rubbish found in the nature, river-side, BBQ, etc.
Although there are also some local people doing the bad things too.

Handing over a clean apartment (same condition as you took over) is one of the best thing I can applaud to. Although some of us are penalised unfairly etc, it is because you are new to the game.

Another thing, besides being dirty, I noticed some people here (not sure locals or otherwise) smell very badly, especially in apartments. They do not shower nor bathe....?

Lets get this straight, they want to show the apartment whilst your still paying rent, I would tell them once I leave the apartment will be clean, so if they don't like it wait till your gone.

Agreed - especially since you're being booted. Of course, there is the issue of previous landlord reference when renting a new place...

True, but if the landlady had STFU and refrained from making stupid generalizations about Swiss vs foreigners, etc. etc. etc.

Precisely. OP, write it off as "dealing with a wacko", of which there are plenty in Switzerland and everywhere else. Think positive - you're moving out soon!

Re: Clean Swiss, dirty foreigners..I am so cross

Have you ever thought there might be a bit to the claim it is the foreigners? Travel to Asia, India, the Arab countries and the one common theme is that they are filthy places where the locals show no respect to their environment. Just got back from Indonesia and the place is simply one big garbage tip. Cairo is another cess pit and then you have India....
I have friends from these countries and they are embarrassed by it. The Swiss and the other European countries in the north are generally very clean, orderly and disciplined societies. Simple fact and I am all or it.

Foreigners are not limited to those you listed. Many of them here are not even from Asia or Middle East.

They are also overpopulated, developing countries, which means they can't be compared by even close to the same standards. There are definitely differing cultural values surrounding garbage, but an enormous amount of that comes from the fact that until extremely recently all packaging materials used there were 100% recyclable/biodegradable.

It doesn't matter where you come from. Blaming the foreigners is a populist game.

Here in Switzerland its quite strong, but that's because it's heritage and traditions are much older and the people are more insular and the SVP is more vocal and... and they imagine they can still defend the mountains.

I ignore such ignorant rhetoric.
