Is Swiss culture the rudest you have encountered?

Hey y'all hot sweaty people

What a beautiful day!

Been out and about getting things done today, and the usual rudeness, pushing, lack of courtesy has been in high spirits.

Maybe it's the heat that's making it worse or more noticeable today, but thought I would put it to the forum:

Is Swiss culture the rudest you have encountered?? If not, what is and why?

I appreciate perspectives are different, and I guess being British the concept of just basic common courtesy is ingrained into our culture, or atleast what we perceive to be so.

So what's with the groups of morons that stand in front of doors that 50 people are trying to exit because they are desperate for that choice of seat on the bus? You will get an elbow in the face and don't be shocked by it!

Why are they even doing that when there are 20 people clearly waiting for the bus before them?

Why do people perceive ones shoulder as a valid seat / leaning post? For them or their bag?

If you work in a shop, and you are stacking the shelf, but a customer wants to reach for something from where you are, why is it not obvious to take a step back and allow the customer to shop in the shop?

Why when two members of staff are having a chit chat blocking an aisle is it not obvious customer can not get past and move? Why is the scusie (sic) met with a tut and a huff?

What is wrong with these people?

You pay me well and you tax me low and the country is beautiful.

But sort out the density of your brains!

Rant over!

Re: Is Swiss culture the rudest you have encountered?

WOW! I always thought the Swiss were the rudest because of the rainy, gray, depressing weather?

So you mean to tell me they dont get any better with heat?

Unlike the French, they are not super-arrogant. It just always seems like they were never taught how to take others feelings into consideration.

Its the same thing when I go shopping. People run into you. Unlike the US there is no system for shopping isles. People just act like youre in their way.

Mom and Dad never taught these people to take others feelings into consideration.

There are different levels of rude. I dont think its an arrogant, snobby, form of rude. Its just a lack of parenting and manners.

Been Paris, dirty yes, rude not.

Scusie is rude? Is not the same as excuse me? Personally I think the lack of awareness to blocking an aisle creating a blockage; particularly when you are staff is rude. Ramming the trollie through them would be rude, but then I guess it would be Swiss, next time perhaps.

The alien had to arrive, no Swiss was educated enough to do the job.

Re: Is Swiss culture the rudest you have encountered?

I love Switzerland and am happy to also have a Swiss passport. However....I am somehow taken aback, whilst abroad, by the courtesy and friendliness of others. Does this mean, I have become Swiss, or at least, accustomed to their behaviour?

Once, whilst abroad, an elderly woman's conversation left me wondering if I should KNOW her...so I asked if she had been friends with my mother. She smiled and said; " no honey, I am just being nice..."

Of course, I also get very annoyed by those same "nice people" by their irresponsible behaviour toward the environment and political attitudes.

No place is perfect...but sometimes....I do miss the friendliness.

Im in Spain right now.... And unfortunately Paris has come to me.

All the French guys wear speedos and sunglasses in the grocery store. My son keeps asking me why these people forgot pants. The arrogance is astounding! But even they dont run into you at the store

Clearly you haven't lived in London (not to mention Paris!) and commuted to work by tube during rush hour...

Otherwise you would have found that that so called "British concept of basic common courtesy" doesn't apply to London either and is largely a myth that only survives in rural or small-town Britain.

Clearly you haven't seen me on the threads much.

Born and bred south east London, worked in central for 9 years. Occasionally, in a much busier city, you would encounter the commuter ignorance, it was often met head on, and then you go aha, tourist!

Perhaps, not encountered NYC yet. But note, i am not just talking about commuter ignorance. Do the Americans make you want to throw your shopping on the floor and say screw you I'll take my custom elsewhere too?

Re: Is Swiss culture the rudest you have encountered?

My impression of the Swiss people is totally the opposite. People smiling on the streets, not shouting words at you when they don't like the way you dress, greeting the strangers, not hasting, having time to wait until someone peacefully finishes looking at sth in the shop and not pushing or yelling at him/her to move on because they want to take a look themselves... It's not the most friendly country ever for sure, as I've had my tough moments here as well, and sometimes they are bloody racist, but in general I find it much calmer and positive here than where I come from.

China is not so great either. Try standing at an airline ticket counter when a flight gets cancelled. The only reason I ended up being dealt with first is because I am very big. Hmmm, thinking about it maybe my "Swissness" paid off

They could certainly learn how to eat!

They are very hospitable people though, can never do enough to help you.

I wanted 30 different cakes in a bakery once, the assistant misunderstood I wanted 3. As I notice the small bag and her picking up 1 of each of the 3 cakes I wanted and not 10 of each, I said oh no sorry I want 30. She huffed and puffed and made such a big deal if it I could of slapped her in the face right there and then if there was another cake shop close by.

Central-Eastern Europe. Some people like it there, so maybe it's me with bad luck. Or maybe not. Go yourself and check :P

I don't know, everywhere here. I never encountered any rudeness or hasting on their side and I also peacefully wait for my turn when someone's been earlier. And I don't mind people not treating me as a queen... It's usually fine if things work without rudeness but also without being supernice.

I think you're making a basic mistake of extrapolting Zueri manners to the rest of the country. Remember, the bigger the city the higher the number of foreigners.
