There was an old style bollywood cinema in Glasgow that did this and would serve lovely samosas at the break.

Re: In the cinema - movie interrupted by commercials

I remember the days in the UK when we all had to stand for the National Anthem at the end of the film - and nobody would have dared walk out before it was finished

The 'entracte'/intermission seems to only happen nowadays in smaller independent cinemas and no longer in big city chains. I quite like my ice-cream at the 'entracte'

Re: In the cinema - movie interrupted by commercials

Hi, Indian movies have a similar "Intermission" .... Happens right when the story take a twist... but then bollywood movies are over 180 mins long.
But even in India, the English movies dont have such breaks not that I mind having them.

So here goes, my first complaint thread:....The Cinemas!

Yesterday for the first time in CH we tried out the local cinema (in Zug) and were much surprised (and annoyed) with the fact that right in the middle of the movie, out of nowhere, the movie was cut and the lights put on: Break time for quite a while with commercials running over the screen!

I was afterwards told that this is perfectly normal and the break is intented for those who wants to go to the toilet during the movie...!?

I don't get it...All these years, cinemas around the world people use the toilets before and after the movie which seems to work well. But not here?...I just don't get it and I felt cheated (the movie was just of average lenght). It felt like watching television where commercial breaks would occur. The only difference was that we paid a lot more to go the cinema to enjoy the atmosphere, better sound etc., as a whole - all that a cinema can provide which watching television at home can't. The commercial break in the middle totally disrupted the 'cinema feeling'

Is it really normal and perfectly fine around Switzerland to interrupt movies in the cinemas for a commercial break/toilet need, or were we just unlucky in our first try?

Thank you all for the replies...Guess I'll just have to get used to it, go local, go elsewhere, stay home, start smoking, buy beer, while I wonder what person A almost completed saying, when [CUT] ...

From now on I will archive this experience as TIS ("This is Switzerland"!) - my equivalent to TIA ("This is Africa"!) - Useful at times when local things don't quite makes sense to me

All in all, I find that most of my personal TIS or TIA experiences have added charm and personal, overall positive memories to me. This TIS will too ...I think....hope...maybe...I don't know yet

Re: In the cinema - movie interrupted by commercials

Never had a break in Geneva or Lausanne cinemas, although having sat through the last hour of Argo bursting for the loo but not wanting to miss a key scene I would have welcomed a break.

They certainly have breaks in Greek cinemas when I've been there, and it seems to happen at very random moments, mid-scene or sentence. At one open air cinema they came round with pizza and dough balls in the break

Re: In the cinema - movie interrupted by commercials

It took me by surprise the first time I saw movies here too, but as some have noted, here in Basel, either not all movies have the intermission anymore in the larger theaters, or none of the movies playing in the larger theaters do - as I generally watch one movie a month (at most), I can't say for sure which it is.

Nope. Even after 18 years it still annoys the bejesus out of me. Totally unnecessary and often occurs at outrageously inappropriate moments in the movie.
Yes, they need to time it to a presentation transition. Like TV commercials do for the most part. Not right in the middle of an action scene, car chase or key plot dialog.

If it's a super long flick, hell, have 2 breaks. Time them between acts. Something like that.

After 10 years here I like the breaks. Sitting through 3.5 hours of Titanic with a movie-sized drink and all that water wasn't fun!

When i was a kid there were a first and a second half fir every movie at the cinema. But the screen was switched off between the two, today they put commercials.
So it was perfectly normal some time ago.

Another plus is that if you inadvertantly find yourself watching a Kevin Costner movie you can sneak off halfway through without disturbing the fangrans.

titanic is the classic example of where the breaks can be useful too. You can skip the mushy first half and join for the sinking bit after the interval.

Re: In the cinema - movie interrupted by commercials

The cinema intermission is just another example (along with no shopping on Sundays or late at night, church bells ringing 24/7, children walking unaccompanied to Kindergarten, and people being generally polite to each other) of Switzerland being stuck in the 1950s. And that's not such a bad thing.

The break is commonly known as the raucher pause i.e. the smoking break. It's always been that way here except in Basel which is the only place in Switzerland I have been to & seen a movie all the way through with no break.
The cinemas in Lausanne don't have intermissions, I believe.

Re: In the cinema - movie interrupted by commercials

It's probably due to the way cinema viewing has changed over the years. When I was a kid you used to get a shorert feature film, then the commercials, then the main feature film, but nowadays you just have the one film.

How strange. I've never been in the cinema here and had a break in the middle of the film... either in Lausanne or in Vevey.

I don't think I'd like it either!

Re: In the cinema - movie interrupted by commercials

I thought of this thread today when hubby and I went to watch Man of Steel. It was a great movie, but no intermission, and some reason, with probably 30min or so left, I was practically dancing in my chair.

I miss the intermissions!

Re: In the cinema - movie interrupted by commercials

First time I experienced it I thought it was a tad strange and annoying but only because it occurred mid-sentence at a particularly tense, poignant and important point in the movie.

For those who've said they got short (well almost anyways) because of sitting through a film with no break, I just don't get it. I mean its not like cinema goers are automatically strapped into their seats once the film starts, only to be released at an intermission is it now!

Okay, now I must get back to watching the brilliant "Dog Soldiers" movie again.
