Re: In the cinema - movie interrupted by commercials

I had my first movie experience in Switzerland last week and this was my favorite feature! I'm a big film fan but I do get a little bit ADD, especially in theaters, and I thought the break was awesome because it gave me an opportunity to use the bathroom and get another drink. It's an ingenious idea, in my opinion. Plus the theater was so nice, tons of leg room and comfy seats.

The cinema intermission is just another example (along with no shopping on Sundays or late at night, church bells ringing 24/7, children walking unaccompanied to Kindergarten, and people being generally polite to each other) of Switzerland being stuck in the 1950s. And that's not such a bad thing.

The cinemas in Lausanne don't have intermissions, I believe.
Heh, I've noticed this in my neighborhood too - now that's a total culture shock, especially coming from the US.

Re: In the cinema - movie interrupted by commercials

Never experienced a cinema break back in the 50s, 60, 70s, 80s or 90s in US or UK (I more or less stopped going at all after that). Except for one - that was during "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" when it was first released in the UK cinemas. There they were chasing the airship with carrying Grandpa away over the sea and just as they went over the cliff - interval! Mind you at 2hr24mins it was a long film by 1968 standards.

Get used to it . I think this is mainly because they want to sell more stuff (drings etc) during the break...

Re: In the cinema - movie interrupted by commercials

In the olden days, pre digital, movies were generally on three pools. The intermission came at the end of one of those spools.

Or, even further back, the first "half" of being in the cinema included watching a news reel, a cartoon and at the saturday matinee, a segment of The Phantom or the Lone Ranger. At halftime, the icecream person came around the auditorium with a tray of pre-coned icecreams to sell, which took the pressure off from the crowds that went out to the icecream and sweet shop in the foyer.

for young kids, the halftime ads were a fun time of taking taking turns as to what we were al going to own as each side appeared.

Even further, further back (or so I have been told, I was not around then) the piano player took a break during the intermission.

It wasn't so long ago -- maybe 10-15 years ago -- that the Roseville Cinema in Sydney featured a piano that rose majestically through a hatch in the stage floor at intermission to entertain the masses.

Ah, the good ol' days.

Thankfully cinemas in Geneva have stopped doing it. I would miss it, as a bathroom break is always welcome, but the moments they chose to pause the movie were almost always terrible.

Re: In the cinema - movie interrupted by commercials

I am not a fan of the break - even when I was smoking I wouldnt use it to go for a smoke. I wouldnt need the toilet as (like a grown up) I went before the film started! lol

I brought kids to the cinema and when the break started "We need money.." for more junk. Lets be honest, cinema isnt cheap to begin with! I didnt give the kids anymore money (needed to make my mortgage payments that month ) but i still felt a little guilty saying "no" when all the other kids were runnning out for ice-cream!

Kids aside- it wouldnt be as bad if they just chose the break times a little better

The break is commonly known as the raucher pause i.e. the smoking break. It's always been that way here except in Basel which is the only place in Switzerland I have been to & seen a movie all the way through with no break.
i have been to seen three movies at cinemas in Basel and all of them had breaks in them.

My MIL took my son to the cinema here. She took him out during the interval to go to the loo and stopped on the way back by the popcorn stand so as to treat him to a bucket of popcorn before the second half.

"ah no thank you, grand-mère" he declared loudly at the front of the popcorn queue "because their popcorn couldn't possibly be as good as my Mummy's". Good boy. I have taught him well. You are safe to take him to the cinema, Niamhie!

I agree 99% plus one - You do the math.

Anyway: I also hate the breaks and I truly believe it ruins the cinema feeling. And NO this NOT "normal" for a cinema. Go to any movie festival be it Cannes or Berlin and you will not have a break in between. This is just about money and the reason I am no longer going to a cinema in CH. Why would I? The only reason for me is 3D which is not the same at home.

For the rest...just pick up the bluray and enjoy in the comfort of my own home.

Re: In the cinema - movie interrupted by commercials

We discovered that in Lisbon last summer when in the middle of new James Bond movie the screening stopped and the timer countdown for a break came up. First we were surprised but soon got used to it! It gives you time to relax, go to the toilet and to chat about half of the movie plot! Priceless!

Re: In the cinema - movie interrupted by commercials

I like the break, I am used to it after many years here and would miss it.

I do wish people would shut the hell up during the film though.

I would say, I have had to ask people to be quiet in each of the last five films I have seen. I believe I am cursed.

One couple of women behind me were making such a noise, I snapped and told them to please shut up. They looked at me in shock and I returned to my seat. Imagine how we all felt when I then noticed that it wasnt that couple at all but another couple a few rows further behind.

Re: In the cinema - movie interrupted by commercials

an Intermission or Interval is a staple of Bollywood (and its regional brethren) so much so that the original prints almost always have an artistically prepared slide in the movie's theme to indicate this break... it is usually at an important junction in the movie's story giving the audience reason to hurry to return to their seats after spending a bucketload on expensive cinema finger food

Re: In the cinema - movie interrupted by commercials

When the movie was shot so that the intermission is expected, like I think it was the case for Ben Hur, fine.
But the way movies are cut here doesn't make any sense at all. It's almost always in the middle of a scene, when some atmosphere has been built up, and baaam! Cut! Time for the junkies to step out.
If only the movie would be re-winded back a minute, but no, it carries on exactly in the middle of the sentence that has been cut 5 minutes earlier. And you pay $20 for that service. You have to not like movies to enjoy the way it's done.
The Pathe in Bern has no breaks, but very few movies in their original language.

Cinemas in New York cost around 16-20usd - so not a huge difference in price anymore.

And in the US the film is interrupted every 5minutes by someone receiving a text.

Besides - having an interval halfway through allows you to leave a Tom Cruise film without disturbing other people
