Cinemas in New York cost around 16-20usd - so not a huge difference in price anymore.

And in the US the film is interrupted every 5minutes by someone receiving a text.

Besides - having an interval halfway through allows you to leave a Tom Cruise film without disturbing other people
You paid money to see a Tom Cruise movie?

So here goes, my first complaint thread:....The Cinemas!

Yesterday for the first time in CH we tried out the local cinema (in Zug) and were much surprised (and annoyed) with the fact that right in the middle of the movie, out of nowhere, the movie was cut and the lights put on: Break time for quite a while with commercials running over the screen!

I was afterwards told that this is perfectly normal and the break is intented for those who wants to go to the toilet during the movie...!?

I don't get it...All these years, cinemas around the world people use the toilets before and after the movie which seems to work well. But not here?...I just don't get it and I felt cheated (the movie was just of average lenght). It felt like watching television where commercial breaks would occur. The only difference was that we paid a lot more to go the cinema to enjoy the atmosphere, better sound etc., as a whole - all that a cinema can provide which watching television at home can't. The commercial break in the middle totally disrupted the 'cinema feeling'

Is it really normal and perfectly fine around Switzerland to interrupt movies in the cinemas for a commercial break/toilet need, or were we just unlucky in our first try?

The break is used also to go to the bar, to drink and/or eat something, for salesmen to do some sales, for people meeting and talking, for smokers to get to the fumoir. It always was so in the past, is so and will be so in the future

Ha! I guess the plan to defeat the 1992 initiative to join the EU was hatched during the break in a showing of Home Alone.

The break seemed odd to me too-the first movie I saw was interrupted in the middle of a conversation between two main characters.

But, yeah, the ice-cream stampede is sort of cute
i've grown indifferent to it, but am annoyed when they cut it at a bad place and don't even start it at the right place again.

i remember at one of the ZFF, it was cut during the most critical conversation and replayed a few seconds after missing the whole point of the movie.

the director/producer/writer of the film had a talk immediately after and made his feelings on that known quite forcefully! :P

A bad side-effect of that film is that there are now a lot of kids called Kevin in Switzerland.

for people meeting and talking,
I always assumed this was what they thought the film was for...

I seem to end up within earshot of some numpty who doesn't understand what's going on and insists on a running commentary from their companion, or people who have to continue an in-depth discussion about xyz.

I thought that this kind of interruption is appropriate only for theaters, opera etc...

It's being phased out all over, so I wouldn't be so sure about that. Well, maybe in your lifetime.

wasn't so many years ago this was the norm in the uk too
Really?? I can never remember there being a pause in the uk. I guess it depends on your definition of many though.

I like the pause though, gives time to adjust in the uncomfortable seats!

Re: In the cinema - movie interrupted by commercials

I remember the first film I saw in a Swiss movie theater, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. The movie break came seconds after the mutilated cat on the doorstep.

I thought it was some censor who pulled the plug on the film at that instant!

Re: In the cinema - movie interrupted by commercials

I find the break annoying unless i have to urinate. If i have to urinate, i appreciate the break.

If i dont have to urinate i get annoyed with the break but forget it right after the movie starts again.

In Italy is the same, I think it is convenient.

I went to the cinema in Zug recently and was told it was not allowed to buy a ticket with cards, only cash!

Heh, I've noticed this in my neighborhood too - now that's a total culture shock, especially coming from the US.
well, brother and me in our Kindergarten times would have been most embarassed had any adult expressed the strange wish to accompany us enroute to the Kindergarten

Get used to it . I think this is mainly because they want to sell more stuff (drings etc) during the break...
Sure. And in Opera and Theater with several acts, the breaks give you a chance to leave out one act, for example the third, and then be really awake for the 4th act.

In the olden days, pre digital, movies were generally on three pools. The intermission came at the end of one of those spools.

Or, even further back, the first "half" of being in the cinema included watching a news reel, a cartoon and at the saturday matinee, a segment of The Phantom or the Lone Ranger. At halftime, the icecream person came around the auditorium with a tray of pre-coned icecreams to sell, which took the pressure off from the crowds that went out to the icecream and sweet shop in the foyer.

for young kids, the halftime ads were a fun time of taking taking turns as to what we were al going to own as each side appeared.

Even further, further back (or so I have been told, I was not around then) the piano player took a break during the intermission.
Not so very far back. Up into the 1960ies, people sometimes simply went to a cinema not so much for the film in question but the see the Wochenschau which was the film compilation of the news of the past week. People at home just had newspapers and the radio, but no films. So that after the Wochenschau, some people even simply left

I agree 99% plus one - You do the math.

Anyway: I also hate the breaks and I truly believe it ruins the cinema feeling. And NO this NOT "normal" for a cinema. Go to any movie festival be it Cannes or Berlin and you will not have a break in between. This is just about money and the reason I am no longer going to a cinema in CH. Why would I? The only reason for me is 3D which is not the same at home.

For the rest...just pick up the bluray and enjoy in the comfort of my own home.
Without the break(s) there is no cinema feeling
