Re: Disgusting Coffee at Zurich HB

There is a Spettacolo at Zurich HB around the platform 53 and 54 area. Also one at Zurich Altstetten. They do decent coffee and much prefer them to Starbuck's.

As mentioned in the thread. For people under time contraints the options are rather meager. If I had 30mins, I would stroll over to http://www.cafe-noir.ch/ where I sure could have a decent coffee. However, since I need to catch another train within 10 or so minutes, I am limited to the takeaway options.

I disagree - I've tasted Pabst Blue Ribbon. Perrier tastes more like beer than that.
Well, PBRs aren't ~$6.00/per, even in an upscale yuppie drinkie bar where PBRs are all the rage with the hipster crowd.

Re: Disgusting Coffee at Zurich HB

Meh, I had to put up with a coffee bought on train this morning. That said it was better than I expected. It had flavour, but lacked in any subtleties. Then again any port in a storm. It was lavazza or something or other.

Personally I'm actually convinced that coffee served in a paper/cardboard cup really changes the flavour immensely. At work we have a seriously proper coffee machine (the type that's used in the gastro industry) that does all the grinding etc, and the taste does differ significantly as to whether it's put in a disposable paper cup or a proper coffee cup.

Mind you I've noticed the difference between two identical nesspresso capsules being used in different machines, so maybe I'm just a coffee snob.

Lavazza - always makes me laugh, as in French 'lavasse' is term used for dish water.

Material of container really does change the taste - try and drink water in an earthenware mug, and it tastes totally different to in a glass.

I have tea really weak, no milk nor sugar, and it does taste much better in a porcelain mug, compared to in an earthenware one.

Well if people pretend that different shaped glasses change the flavour of wine, then i'm sure that paper vs china works

Now once in a while, due to time contraints, I have to opt out of my homegrown Kopi Luwak from virgin gerbils out of some far away island and I´m forced to rejoice from a cup from your common coffee stall. There are but 3 places, where you can get coffee on the run at the mainstation in Zurich. One is the Segafredo Tuk-Tuk, which by the way also sells hotdogs, the other is the newly built Segafredo takeaway stall or if you´re really desperate the kiosk. Both the kiosk and the Tuk-Tuk device sell one disgusting coffee, which I could not even finish.... The Segafredo stall is only better in terms of flavor, but it still tastes like some lukewarm cup of watery something. I really wish, there were some halfway decent options, especially considering the exorbitant price we pay for disgusting brew. There, end of Monday morning rant.
Go to the train-perron for S7 S5 S6 north and try the
http://www.sbb.ch/bahnhof-services/a...noalporto.html
where they sell acceptable coffee and good wines and good beer

And the
http://www.sbb.ch/bahnhof-services/a...ilbaretto.html
offers good coffee, excellent wines and delicious sweets and the whole stuff at moderate prices

Bluberry and Il Baretto both do takeaway coffee. If you think that take away coffee only comes form a tuk tuk, then you are your own worst enemy ;-)

Actually, the coffee served on the trains these days is pretty good in my opinion. Much better than it used to be a few years back.

Absolutely, however I only have a few minutes between trains and lo and behold other commuters seem to be wanting coffee as well . Thus it becomes almost mission impossible to get a "decent" takeaway coffee.

To be fair, you'd be queueing for coffee in any given railway station in the morning at rush-hour, so it's not really something peculiar to Zurich.

There are decent places for coffee but, like everywhere else, you've got to wait in line.

On the other hand, if you were in the UK, the chances are that your train would be delayed so you'd have some extra time.

Damn Switzerland and its efficiency...

If you have time to zip to the corner, same level, when changing trains, I actually had a decent coffee to go a few times at the Burger King, the to-go window serves fast.

In Switzerland, that hand is reserved for Red Bull.
Maybe that's a zurich thing....What always amazes me so much here is how trends change so much in such short distances. I see alot of people here drinking those cold coffee or cappuccino (I don't know what they are) that you buy in the coop or convenience stores.
Red Bull, how can people drink that...its so disgusting!

So, there I was, in the middle of nowhere in Alberta, and the gas station (it was also a post office, convenience store, pharmacy, and other many things) had really good, cheap coffee to go. Big, too. The only problem was one had to drive there from the farm, for about an hour.

I think it might just be easier to quit expecting too much when getting something while running around. Then one gets pleasantly surprised. Like at Burger King at HB ZH, or, MacDo in LS.

The worst are those that add flavour - cardboard can certainly do so, but nothing like as mush as plastic, or the very worst those wful styrofoam ones that used to be all the rage, particularly for larger drinks. I could never understand why soo many people didn't seem to mind, until I realised that many people just couldn't taste or smell it

Likewise. And a glass is defintely better if you want it black, strong and with sugar, in middle-eastern style. Don't know why, scientifically-speaking, and haven't done blinded testing, but I'm sure this is the case.

Indeed. And the standard Swiss response would be - it's not the fault of the coffee., it's your fault for wanting it on the run. Relax, sit down, slow down, etc. Not sure I agree totally in the more general sense, but a coffee 'to go' is, for me, a very different thing from a coffee in a real cup, and I would never expect them to be the same.

If you lived in Geneva you would only pay about 3.60 for a delicious coffee at the train station, which you could share with the resident druggies and their dogs....

Spettacolo isn't too bad.

usually i make a coffee to go using my Gaggia bean-to-cup Brera machine. I pour it into one of those starbucks porcelain cups that look like the cardboard ones!

If you have a first class ga you can use the first class lounge upstairs where they serve free coffee and a range of other drinks besides.
