Disgusting Coffee at Zurich HB

Now once in a while, due to time contraints, I have to opt out of my homegrown Kopi Luwak from virgin gerbils out of some far away island and I´m forced to rejoice from a cup from your common coffee stall. There are but 3 places, where you can get coffee on the run at the mainstation in Zurich. One is the Segafredo Tuk-Tuk, which by the way also sells hotdogs, the other is the newly built Segafredo takeaway stall or if you´re really desperate the kiosk. Both the kiosk and the Tuk-Tuk device sell one disgusting coffee, which I could not even finish.... The Segafredo stall is only better in terms of flavor, but it still tastes like some lukewarm cup of watery something. I really wish, there were some halfway decent options, especially considering the exorbitant price we pay for disgusting brew. There, end of Monday morning rant.

Isn't there a MickeyD's nearby - I've always found their coffee acceptable.

Do you have an example of what you would consider a good cup of coffee?

Switzerland is quite primitive when it comes to coffee - with many of the locals preferring the rather antiquated method of - going to a cafe, sitting down, ordering a coffee in a proper cup, drinking it there, paying and leaving. The new fangled idea of going into a place - ordering coffee by the gallon - paying - receiving your coffee in a paper cup (with your mis-spelled name on it) - walking out with it - is slowly being introduced.

Don't worry LiB - Dunkin' Donuts will be along soon.

Americans complaining about coffee...

What's next?
Italians complaining about traffic chaos?
British about rain?

What can be readily had just over the (southern) border.

Which is what we did on Saturday (with a white-wine chaser).

Also picked up 2kg of fresh porcini, a chunk of beef that we ate raw last night, and some pork and horse sausages, that we'll probably eat raw later in the week.

"il baretto" by the head of platforms 13-16 is quite good. It's a sit-down place so I can see how you'd have overlooked it, but they also do a brisk to-go trade.

Right, I got a couple of mintues between trains, I don´t know if I can make it back from across the Italian border without the coffee getting cold.

The very idea of someone getting reeealy upset (just enough to start a thread on EF) because his coffee sucks....I dont know about others, but I for one find it reassuring when people complain about stuff like that. Makes me want to become a coffee snob.

Make your own.

Because there is sack-all hope of getting a decent cup of take away black tea (builders' tea: strong tea, milk and two sugars) anywhere in Zurich (or maybe even all of Switzerland?), I have resorted to taking my own heavenly brew in a flask on my commute.

Below par coffee isn't as soul destroying as a crap cup of tea.

Which is odd when you consider that Switzerland is famous as a tea drinking nation.

I want to complain that I can't get decent Fondue in London

Nooo, I don't mean the herbal/fruity concoctions which smell delightful but taste of hot water with a spritz of wet dog. I mean tea with a capital "T"!

You don't think perhaps I was being sarcastic with the 2 ???

But as with a lot of things, this is Switzerland this is not <insert place where you either came from or where you consider things to be infinitely better> and therefore you will get the things that the Swiss want. This may be coffee the way they like it, tea the way they like - and even perhaps Rivella!!

It is only globalisation that is bringing gallon sized coffee cups. Until the UK stops being a recipient of trends and pushes it own ones out (Tea - with a capital T) we will be doomed to be only able to buy crap Tea.

Of course, I don't expect to get a decent cuppa like I make at home, and I'm fine with it. Plus it saves me a bundle of money taking my own along with me each day.

Decent strong black tea is probably the only "must have" I still carry over from my previous life. Every other "must have" has slowly been replaced over the years by something else.
