So Medea, can you please give us real life examples of the kind of unwarranted cyber bullying on this forum that you think could drive someone to suicide? I mean unwarranted and persistent harassing of someone who is otherwise innocent and doesn't intentionally provoke any other member?

Or are you just exaggerating and using extreme examples to push what is a largely non existent point. It's ok, you wouldn't be the first.
I never said this forum Richdog. But bullying does happen as we all know on all forms of social media.

@Everyone who has been offended by anything on the web
FFS everyone - it is the internet - it doesn't really matter. All this <points wildly around EF> is bollocks - its not real - it has no influence over your life. It is a distraction from the banality of the real world...
This is the nub of the problem -- the inability of the loud-mouthed few to see that their own selfish perspective may actually not be shared by everyone else. Total lack of empathy. "This is my view and it's not my fault if you're all too stupid to understand what the internet is really all about."

Seriously, why not stick to the obviously light-hearted discussions where your banal contributions are more likely to be enjoyed? It's as if you have the need to get your name up there in everything, a desire not to be left out, even when the subject matter is beyond your understanding or interest. Someone previously said something about those who need their egos massaging, referring to their victims. It's time to turn the mirror the other way round. Learn when to butt out, and learn that your personal prejudices on the true purpose of the internet are not universal truths.

Re: The Treatment of New Posters

If we were to apply your logic then everything could "potentially" lead to the worst-case scenarios. You are essentially manipulating outcomes of extreme scenarios to suit your argument. This forum does not have a problem with real bullying and never has.

What it has are are three things:

1) A load of delicate and sensitive people who flap their arms and post rubbish on a regular basis and then are shocked when people react negatively to them. These people then cry mobbing and bullying, despite continually doing themselves no favours and often clandestinely more hostile than the perceived bullies, with PM and rep abuse being a primary tactic (a la Nil and Hausamsee etc).

2) A load of snarky and sarcastic people who can't resist poking fun at said delicate and sensitive people who flap their arms and post absolute rubbish on a regular basis.

3) The small minority of people who don't get involved and do their best to ignore 1) and 2) while rolling their eyes and sighing quietly to themselves.

If you actually take a deep breath and think about things objectively then what we see in the Tabloid media is many orders of magnitude worse and more vicious than what we see on this forum. What we see on this forum is lot of ribbing, yes, but I would be hard-pushed to find anyone other than the occasional unwitting newbie who has never used a forum before and has the technological knouse of a grapefruit who genuinely doesn't provoke or deserve it.

In addition, all of the above groups contribute genuinely useful posts and threads.

So please, lets have some perspective.

When did I sent you a pm of abuse dear lovable richdog? You love to insult those who stand up to you. Nothing new here. If you want me too to stop to use the same recording over and over again, change the damn tune. Easy.

That's an amazingly verbose summary. Was it really necessary? Is it that important to you?

Odile is back - on the flounce scale it recorded a 3.8 - nothing to worry about, business as usual.

(The reincarnation of a mod recorded a far higher score on the flounce-o-meter)

BTW - I suspect this is effectively Friday for many of us, so can the rest of you ramp up the mudslinging and turn this into a proper Friday thread?

Re: The Treatment of New Posters

For me the most annoying thing, which I may sometimes have done, are the posts which its may purpose is to make fun of the OP.

It is annoying because sometimes I am looking for the answer and I have to go past 1 or 2 pages of people, mainly the same few guys, making fun and talking to each other (patting their backs) in the thread till I realize there is no useful answer to the actual question or I just stop reading annoyed.

Of course I used to just groan at those annoying posts, if I posted to explain that their joke was wasting my time in the search of an answer I would add another post in the thread that would waste someones else time. So i never add to the problem but then I was banned for mass groan since these jokers don't like the groans, funny right?

I wish there was a way you guy could make fun of posters and not add crap to the tread, but as one will soon realize EF is no longer a reference website but more a social one.

So here is my suggestions, make some sections with more restricted rules, where posts not answering or helping the poster are immediately removed by mods, and of course make sections where the veterans can make fun of people and have their social time.

It is already in the Forum rules just need enforcement

ROFLMAO.

Mods would be deleting 80% of the posts - 90% of those would be argued about by the original posters - 40% would be reinstated - randomly depending on the mod.

Nobody really cares enough to do that on EF anymore.

Re: The Treatment of New Posters

I find it really annoying when I see a post in New Posts I might be interested in and its a reply to a comment relating to a thread where the last post was made in 2009. Does my comment belong in the first world problem thread? I am so unsure these days! It must be Friday...

Here's someone who tried to ask for up-to-date info on a matter that has been discussed years ago. If he dared to ask on the old threads, TobiasM would be unhappy. However, when he makes a new thread, he gets smartass/inane answers (usually about using the search function): Give me a ballpark figure

How should one proceed on EF in such cases?
