I've heard placing an old mattress on the roof is the ideal way of keeping the snow off.

Re: Bad manners from Forum members [Marketplace no-shows]

Another tip which I think has been mentioned is that if someone has red rep it's most likely for a reason and take that into consideration when dealing with people.

The mattress person (30chf for it) had very red rep and a stinker thread trying to sell a overpriced pressure cooker.

30chf for a mattress. Come and get it and piss off ffs. It's going to the dump now.

Happy new year

There is one lady on Glocals who used to arrange restaurant meet ups.

She got so pissed off with no shows, that they were eventually put on a Black List.

Imagine booking a restaurant for 30 people and only 20 turn up? That, in my eyes, is rude and disrespecting of the lady and of the restaurant who have blocked 30 seats.

And for the furniture sales, why do people show an interest when they aren't? So rude. Need a bloody reality check.

As for the mattress - tell them to get a bloody van or take the bus. Or shove it up.....
I sat outside the Holy Cow a while ago for a couple of hours waiting for a certain someone to turn up for glass of wine, they couldn't make the EF lunch but said they'd be along afterwards.
'They' didn't show....

But, but but - i knew i wasn't going to be the only one. And you had Zappa and Bertrand and others. I didn't realise you had been sitting on your own, waiting for me.

Sorry!! Shall we try again? This month the only day i am not free is the 19th. Got a friend flying in for a few hours on his way to Thailand.

Let's try and get the Geneva crowd sorted.

You arrange it and i will be there. Promise this time.

Re: Bad manners from Forum members [Marketplace no-shows]

If I remember correctly, Zappa was actually the only one who did turn up! Bertrand (SR) did his usual trick of cancelling at the last minute and the others who said they'd be there for lunch simply didn't appear!
I waited as you'd said you couldn't make lunch itself but would pop by for a glass of wine just after lunchtime on your way to an appointment somewhere; we'd not met before and I didn't want to miss you.

Bit wary of trying to organise things as whenever I do people complain about the day/place/time.... but I'll be here;
Equinoxe
Rue du Pont-Neuf 9
Carouge
around five-five thirty this Friday (9th).
It's right next to the tram stop on Place d'Armes.

I'll be hanging around for a lift home from #2 son so could be there a while as I have to wait until he finishes work.
Black coat and long black and white scarf, glasses, short grey hair..... plus I'm ancient!

Otherwise I'll sort something out properly once the weather's a little warmer.

Re: Bad manners from Forum members [Marketplace no-shows]

Once went all the way to Vevey to help out an EFer (about 1 hour from here)... waited, and then run up and down the pier looking for her- had a new mobile which I could not get to work. It was very hot, and I run up and down asking all and sundry if they were her, or had seen someone looking for someone, etc. Finally, I met a English speaking young woman for the second time, and she asked me if I'd found her (1 hour later than rendez-vous) and I said I had not, and my phone would not work. She told me to use her phone- and I did- the woman answered and started shouting at ME!!! She had been waiting in a Restaurant above the Pier- comfortably sipping a drink- and never once came to see, downstairs, where we had clearly arranged to meet!!! She told me to **** off- I went to see her in the queue for the boat, but she totally ignored me, despite the fact I was apologising (why?!?). Exhausted- I did what we had planned to do, and went to IKEA where I had offered to take her and then return her to boat with the goods she needed. Had lunch there, and then went to meet a wonderful EFer and her OH- who cheered me up no end and then went home. Some people are just incredible. That person then asked for a lift to the UK on EF, a few days before we were driving there with plenty of room to spare- but I thought.... NO WAY.

Another time we offered to bring someone back from the UK with her stuff, and had to make a huge detour to do so. When we arrived at meeting point, in a terrible storm- she was not there. I phoned her and she flippantly said 'not going to Switzerland now, changed my mind'. We missed out Tunnel and had to pay extra and stay in a Hôtel in Calais- but never mind, hey!

Does make you think and hesitate next time, that is for sure. On the other hand, I refuse to let a couple of idiots stop me from trying to help others- but OH is less likely to be willing.

Patsy, don't worry if you can't get there, I try to have a book with me when I'm out and I have to lurk somewhere while wait for #2 son, so it might as well be in the warm and in front of a glass or three of something interesting.

Anjela, if it's any consolation that can happen among friends too. I organised a drinks evening a couple of years ago and 8-10 people said they were definitely coming but obviously they all thought, it's ok there'll be loads of other people there if I can't make it and in the end 2 people finally showed up at 10pm when I'd been there since 7.30

Re: Bad manners from Forum members [Marketplace no-shows]

I simply wouldn’t make an arrangement that inconvenienced me as much as some of the stories in this thread. No, I would not travel an hour out of my way to bring an object to a potential purchaser. Nor would I sit around for ages in a restaurant waiting for someone to arrive. Once someone is more than about 20 minutes late, I assume something has gotten in the way of the plans they had had with me, and then I feel free to make my own, without them. And yes, I use ride-share, but never without confirmation mails the day before, and confirmation sms/phonecalls on the day, before we all set out to the pickup-point.

I’ve found that I avoid disappointment (when exchanging goods, for sale or free) by making only arrangements which really suit me anyway, and then being very specific about where I will be sitting or standing.

As a buyer/collector, I first ask for the dimensions, and check whether the object will fit on my trolley. Then I offer to meet people at railway stations, or in their homes or offices, and I’m reliable about place and time.
- If the object is trolley-compatible, I state at the outset that I will view it and if I like it, I will [buy it and] strap it to my trolley (with which I would appreciate help, if I am alone) and take it with me immediately.
- If the object is large and heavy, I ask if I may come to a viewing, perhaps bringing a friend to help me, or that I might have to arrange transport only after the viewing.
To stay sane, I mostly combine my trip to the seller/giver, by public transport, with some other journey I’m doing anyway. When I’m nearly 100% sure that I will buy, I sometimes ask the seller/giver to please bring the object to the railway station. They often do so because they believe me, because I send them the exact timetable.

As a seller/giver, I ask the buyers/collectors to please confirm all of the above, including that they have transport, before we set the viewing appointment. I explain the parking situation, here.
- If the object is heavy or large the buyer/collector must come to my home.
- If it is not, I prefer to keep my privacy, and ask them to phone me when they’re nearby, and then I take the object to an easy meeting-point very nearby, such as a bus-stop.
To stay sane, I arrange a time when I would have been at home, anyway, and will not have had to rush home from somewhere else, nor be in a rush to go out.

With this degree of precision, in all the years, I’ve only ever had one no-show by a buyer. When she came by three weeks’ later, to apologise, there was still enough visible evidence that she really had been in a car crash.

As far as guests go, even when they say they’ll be there, I keep my heart open to the possibility that they might not come. My close friends would never just let me down like that, and always phone and let me know. But less close friends not always, and from the one event I organised on EF, I can confirm that more people said they’d come, than did.

If I extend hospitality to someone, and then my guest subsequently finds they have to do something else on that day… well, I deduce that they must have had their reasons, e.g. he/she might have overslept, had a fight with someone, or a migraine, or a phone call from a distressed friend… the list is endless. Some people apologise later, others don’t. Oh, well…

The thing is: I just can’t get upset about a no-show. Of course I’m a little disappointed, and besides, I don’t think that’s really good manners. But... then what? Well, I’m a busy person and so I just get on with my own matters.

My father told me that one should never lend money which one can’t afford to lose (= end up giving it away). I think it is the same with time. My lawyer taught me that one shouldn’t enter into any arrangement, ever, unless one has taken the trouble to ascertain whether there is reasonable evidence that both parties will most likely comply.

Having said that, I imagine that anyone trying to get rid of goods in a HURRY must be under a different kind of stress, and I guess that then it’s not as easy to just shrug one’s shoulders and go on to place another ad.

Ditto, I also find it bizzarre the lengths people go to. It's not about saying "but Im a nice person, I do that for people", it's about being sensible and reducing the chances of you being screwed over.

Some of the stories in the thread were just asking for things to go wrong.

Also some very bizarre situations documented here some hint strongly of "look at me, look at me, I'm super nice".

Sure I don't mind going a little bit out of my way but hours.. not a hope unless it is of great advantage to me.

Some buyers also have totally unrealistic expectations and most in my experience tend to be Americans on expat contracts.

One of the best was a woman who viewed and agreed to buy 3 large heavy sofas, all clearly explained they need a van/truck to collect.
Meeting time passed, she called shouting her afternoon was ruined as WE didn't deliver them to zug.... from basel! Spoilt rich housewife that expected everything done for her.

I once removed my own kidney, put it in a box of ice and crawled on my knees all the way to Geneva in the middle of a hurricane and when I got there, I found a note on the door saying they were on their yacht in Barbados and could I leave it in their letterbox.

Needless to say, I gave them the other kidney too because I;m an EF saint!

I don't think so. Even if he did it would be a miracle.

DB, we had made an arrangement that you deliver the kidney at 15.30. You arrived at 1532.

Sorry, i had other arrangements after that time. Us Genevans cannot and will not tolerate tardiness.

The blue note did go down well.

Is the liver still functional? I could swap it for my brain.
